Stella & Chewy's Stella's Super Beef Frozen Raw Dinner Patties
Raw beef patties, frozen immediately after production. Same recipe as the freeze-dried Super Beef patties we stock... just with the water still in it.
Why the protein number looks so much lower than the freeze-dried
This is the single most confusing thing about comparing frozen raw to freeze-dried raw, and the answer is simple once you see it.
| Frozen | Freeze-dried | |
|---|---|---|
| Crude Protein (min) | 15% | 41% |
| Crude Fat (min) | 12% | 35% |
| Moisture (max) | 68% | 5% |
| kcal/kg | 1,869 | 4,940 |
It is the same food. Stella's own freeze-dried page publishes a second "rehydrated" analysis showing what their freeze-dried patties become once you add water back: 15% protein, 12% fat, 68% moisture. Those are exactly these numbers.
So a 15% protein frozen patty is not a weaker food than a 41% freeze-dried one. Take the water out of this and you get that. The only real difference is whether you're paying to have the water removed, and where you store it.
We checked both of Stella's pages line by line to confirm it rather than assuming.
Frozen or freeze-dried: how to actually choose
Frozen is cheaper per pound of food because you're not paying for the drying. It needs freezer space, overnight planning, and it can't be posted... which is why this is pickup and local delivery only.
Freeze-dried costs more per pound, sits in a cupboard, travels, and ships free over $75. It's the one for holidays, car journeys and anyone without a spare freezer drawer.
If you have the freezer and you're local, frozen is the better value on the same recipe. That's the honest answer.
Read the first six ingredients
Beef, beef liver, beef kidney, beef heart, beef tripe, beef bone. Six components before anything else appears, and tripe is the one worth noticing... it turns up in almost nothing else on the shelf.
Beef is the only animal species in it. No fish, no poultry, nothing hidden. Stella puts the recipe at 95% grass-fed beef, nutrient-rich organs and bone.
Then pumpkin seed, organic cranberries, spinach, broccoli, beets, carrots, squash and blueberries. Fenugreek seed, kelp, a full vitamin and mineral package, added taurine. Pea-free, lentil-free and potato-free.
Handling raw food safely
Stella's own published guidance, and it's worth following properly:
- Defrost overnight in a covered container in the refrigerator. For a faster thaw, seal the food in a zip-top bag or glass bowl and submerge in warm water
- Once thawed, keep refrigerated and use within two days
- Do not refreeze raw food once it has thawed
- Wash your hands before and after handling it
- Use a clean dish every time, and clean any utensils or surfaces the raw food touches
- Once served, raw food can sit out for up to two hours. Anything left after that should go in the bin
None of that is onerous once it's a habit, but it is the real difference between frozen raw and opening a bag of kibble. If a household has small children or anyone immune-compromised, it's worth a conversation with us and with your doctor before you start.

Feeding guidelines
Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, split across two meals. The small patties are about 1.5 oz; the large are about 8 oz.
| Your dog's weight | Small patties/day | Large patties/day |
|---|---|---|
| 5 lb | 2 | ¼ - ½ |
| 10 lb | 3½ | ½ |
| 15 lb | 4½ | ¾ |
| 20 lb | 6 | 1 |
| 40 lb | 9½ | 1¼ |
| 60 lb | 13 | 2½ |
| 80 lb | 16½ | 3 |
| 100 lb | 19½ | 3½ |
Every chart is a starting point. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks and adjust.
Switching over
Stella's guidance: introduce gradually over seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. They note sudden diet changes and overfeeding can both cause digestive upset.
Sizes
3 lb box of roughly 1.5 oz patties, and 6 lb and 12 lb boxes of roughly 8 oz patties. The small patties suit a small dog or anyone who wants to portion finely; the large ones suit a big dog and take up less freezer space per pound.
On the label statement
Stella describes this as a 100% complete and balanced diet. They do not publish the formal AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage on their website for any of their frozen or freeze-dried raw products, so we can't tell you from here which life stage it's approved for. Ask us and we'll read it off the box rather than guess.
