Stella & Chewy's FreshMade Gobblin' Good Gently Cooked Dog Food

Sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen in a 16 oz pouch. Cage-free turkey led, and the best protein-to-fat ratio in the FreshMade line.

Read this before you buy: it lives in the freezer

FreshMade is frozen, not refrigerated and not shelf-stable. Stella's instructions:

• Store in the freezer
• Thaw in the refrigerator, in the original pouch
• Allow 24 to 36 hours to thaw completely
• Use within 5 days of thawing

You can't decide at dinnertime to feed this... you pull a pouch the day before. If that doesn't suit your routine, Stella's freeze-dried patties sit in the cupboard and rehydrate in minutes.

Highest protein, lowest fat

12% protein against 4% fat. Both are the extreme ends of the FreshMade range:

Less than half the fat of Meat-A-Palooza, with more protein. If you have a dog on a vet-recommended low-fat diet, or one you're trying to get weight off while keeping protein up, this is the FreshMade recipe to ask your vet about.

On a dry-matter basis the 12% protein works out to roughly 52%, since this is 77% moisture. That's higher than any Stella kibble. Frozen and wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water... compare like with like.

"Single protein recipe" doesn't quite survive the ingredient list

Stella's bullet says single protein recipe, cage-free turkey is #1 ingredient. The turkey part is true: turkey, turkey bone broth and turkey liver are the only meats, and there's no chicken in it, which matters to a lot of people.

But salmon oil is in the list, near the end. Salmon is a second species.

For most dogs that's irrelevant. If you're running an elimination diet or your dog reacts to fish, "single protein" on this bag is not a claim you can rely on. Stella prints that same bullet on three FreshMade recipes and all three contain salmon oil.

Grain and legume free, and this one holds up

We read the whole list: no grain, no peas, no lentils, no chickpeas, no potato. The carbohydrate comes from butternut squash, sweet potato, kale and apples.

Worth noting because Stella's Beefy-Licious recipe contains peas and quietly drops the legume-free claim. This one keeps it and earns it.

Adult dogs only, as a complete meal

Stella's wording: serve as a complete and balanced meal for adult dogs, or topper for all dogs.

A puppy can have it on top of a complete puppy food, but Stella doesn't position this as a puppy diet. Their Pork & Quinoa and Beef, Barley & Turkey are the two FreshMade recipes described for all life stages.

What "gently cooked" means here

Stella's own description: packed in BPA-free pouches, gently sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen. Sous vide means sealed and cooked slowly at a controlled low temperature.

It sits between raw and kibble: cooked, so not raw, but minimally processed and never extruded into a dry pellet. If raw makes you uneasy but you want something closer to real food than kibble, this is the category that answers that. Stella states FreshMade is reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Because it's lighter than the red-meat recipes, you feed more of it... a 30 lb dog takes up to 1¼ pouches a day here against 1 pouch of Meat-A-Palooza. Worth factoring into the cost if you feed it as a diet.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

As a topper: Stella's rate is ¾ oz, about 1½ tablespoons, per 10 lbs of body weight per day. Take those calories off the food underneath.

Stella describes this as complete and balanced for adult dogs and says it's reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, but publishes no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and names no life stage in AAFCO terms on their page. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the pouch.
