Stella & Chewy's FreshMade Beefy-Licious Gently Cooked Dog Food

Sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen in a 16 oz pouch. Beef-led, poultry-free, and the second-richest recipe in the FreshMade line.

Read this before you buy: it lives in the freezer

FreshMade is frozen, not refrigerated and not shelf-stable. Stella's instructions:

• Store in the freezer
• Thaw in the refrigerator, in the original pouch
• Allow 24 to 36 hours to thaw completely
• Use within 5 days of thawing

That thaw time catches people out. You can't decide at dinnertime to feed this... you pull a pouch the day before. If that doesn't suit your routine, Stella's freeze-dried patties sit in the cupboard and rehydrate in minutes.

Because it's frozen, it's pickup or local delivery only. We can't ship it.

"Single protein recipe" doesn't quite survive the ingredient list

Stella's bullet says single protein recipe, grass-fed beef is #1 ingredient. The beef part is true: beef, beef bone broth and beef liver are the only meats.

But salmon oil is in the list, near the end. Salmon is a second species.

For most dogs that's irrelevant and the oil is there for a reason. If you're running an elimination diet or your dog reacts to fish, "single protein" on this bag is not a claim you can rely on. It's worth saying because Stella prints that same bullet on three FreshMade recipes and all three contain salmon oil.

What does hold up: it is genuinely poultry-free. No chicken, no turkey, no duck anywhere in the list.

There are peas in it

At position seven. Worth noticing because Stella's bullet for this recipe says poultry-free, grain-free and stops there, where their Gobblin' Good and Chick-A-Lick'n recipes say grain and legume-free, and Meat-A-Palooza says both.

So the wording is accurate... they just quietly dropped the legume claim on this one, and peas are why. If you're steering away from legumes, Gobblin' Good, Chick-A-Lick'n or Meat-A-Palooza are the FreshMade recipes that qualify.

Where it sits in the line

At 7% fat it suits an active dog. A dog with a pancreatitis history, or on a vet-prescribed low-fat diet, needs that vet's view first... the two poultry recipes are 4%.

11% protein is not what it looks like

This is 75% moisture. Take the water out and the 11% protein becomes roughly 44% on a dry-matter basis, above most kibble. Frozen and wet foods always read low against dry food because of the water.

Adult dogs only, as a complete meal

Stella's wording: serve this high-energy formula as a complete and balanced meal for adult dogs, or topper for all dogs.

A puppy can have it on top of a complete puppy food, but Stella doesn't position this as a puppy diet. Their Pork & Quinoa and Beef, Barley & Turkey are the two FreshMade recipes described for all life stages.

What "gently cooked" means here

Stella's own description: packed in BPA-free pouches, gently sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen. Sous vide means sealed and cooked slowly at a controlled low temperature.

It sits between raw and kibble: cooked, so not raw, but minimally processed and never extruded into a dry pellet. If raw makes you uneasy but you want something closer to real food than kibble, this is the category that answers that. Stella states FreshMade is reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

As a topper: Stella's rate is ¾ oz, about 1½ tablespoons, per 10 lbs of body weight per day. Take those calories off the food underneath. Stella adds that puppies may need up to twice the adult amount.

A 30 lb dog eats a whole pouch a day as a complete diet. As a topper, one pouch lasts that dog about a week... worth doing that arithmetic before you commit.

Size

16 oz BPA-free pouch.

On the label statement

Stella describes this as complete and balanced for adult dogs and says it's reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, but publishes no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and names no life stage in AAFCO terms on their page. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the pouch.
