A novel protein, in a cut that isn't offal

This is the combination that makes it genuinely useful. Lamb is an uncommon protein in American dog food, so a dog raised on chicken and beef has most likely never been exposed to it. And heart is a working muscle, closer in makeup to meat than to liver or kidney.

So if you want to try a new protein but liver-type treats don't agree with your dog, this is the one that answers both problems at once. Stella's lamb liver treats are the true offal; this isn't.

Where it sits

64% protein, 6% fat, 102 calories an ounce... comfortably in the middle of Stella's six single-ingredient treats.

Worth catching: this lands on exactly the same protein and calorie figures as Stella's beef liver treats, 64% and 102 kcal an ounce, differing only by a point of fat. Very different cuts and animals, near-identical numbers. If you're choosing between them, choose on the protein your dog needs, not on the analysis.

Also worth catching: 6% fat here against 11% for Stella's chicken hearts. Same cut, different animal, nearly double the fat. If fat is something you're watching, the lamb and beef hearts are both the better pick.

Genuinely one ingredient, which is rarer than it sounds

"Single ingredient" and "single protein" get printed on plenty of bags that don't survive a read of the back. Stella's own Cage-Free Duck Wild Weenies list turkey liver second. Their Itty Bitty Beef Lil' Bites end on salmon oil. Their Just Jerky Bites Salmon carries seven ingredients.

This one holds up completely, which is exactly what you need if you're running an elimination diet with your vet.

So, ours, plainly: a single muscle is not a balanced diet. Lamb heart on its own is missing most of what a dog needs over time, which is what one ingredient means. These are treats. The usual rule of thumb is to keep treats to around 10% of daily calories and let a complete food do the other 90%... your vet can tell you what that works out to for your dog.
