Stella & Chewy's Freeze-Dried Raw Chicken Breast Dog Treats

Ingredient list, in full: chicken breast. That's it. We read Stella's published list and there is nothing else in it... no preservative, no binder, no glycerin, no salt.

74% protein and 3% fat, which makes this the lean one

Of the six single-ingredient freeze-dried treats Stella makes, this is the highest in protein and by a distance the lowest in fat:

Single-ingredient treat Protein Fat kcal per oz
Chicken Breast 74% 3% 105
Beef Heart 67% 7% 99
Beef Liver 64% 5% 102
Lamb Heart 64% 6% 102
Chicken Heart 63% 11% 119
Lamb Liver 60% 5% 96

3% fat against 11% for Stella's chicken hearts. If you have a dog on a low-fat diet, a dog with a pancreatitis history, or a dog you're trying to get weight off, this is the treat in the range that fits. Talk to your vet, but this is the one to ask them about.

It's also the obvious pick for training. High-value, almost pure protein, breaks into small pieces, and at roughly 105 calories an ounce you can hand out a lot of very small pieces without wrecking the day's calorie budget.

Genuinely one ingredient, and why that's rare

"Single ingredient" and "single protein" get printed on a lot of bags that don't survive a read of the back. Stella's own Cage-Free Duck Wild Weenies list turkey liver second. Their Itty Bitty Beef Lil' Bites end on salmon oil. Their Just Jerky Bites Salmon carries seven ingredients.

This one holds up to the claim completely. For an elimination diet, or a dog where you need to know exactly what went in, that's the whole value.

One gap on Stella's page, and our arithmetic

Stella publishes 105 kcal per ounce for this treat but, unlike its five siblings, leaves the kcal/kg figure off. Converting their own number gives roughly 3,700 kcal/kg.

That's our calculation from Stella's published per-ounce figure, not a number off their label, and we're labeling it as such. We checked the conversion against the five treats where Stella prints both and it holds to within about 1%, so it's sound... but it's ours, not theirs.

How many to give

Stella publishes no treat-count guidance for this product at all, and no AAFCO statement either.

So here's ours, plainly: a single muscle meat is not a balanced diet. Chicken breast on its own is missing most of what a dog needs over time, which is exactly what you'd expect from one ingredient. These are treats. The usual rule of thumb is to keep treats to around 10% of daily calories and let the other 90% come from a complete food... your vet can tell you what that works out to for your dog.

Calorie content

105 kcal per ounce ... approximately 3,700 kcal/kg, calculated by us from Stella's per-ounce figure

Full ingredient list

Chicken Breast.

Size

2.75 oz. Worth noting this bag is slightly smaller than the 3 oz bags Stella uses for the liver and heart treats, which matters if you're comparing prices across the range.

Storage and serving

Shelf-stable, no refrigeration needed. Break larger pieces down for a small dog, and give with fresh water nearby. Supervise, as with any treat.

On the label statement

Stella publishes no AAFCO statement for this product, and notably no "for intermittent or supplemental feeding only" line, which is what you'd normally expect to see on a treat. The absence of that line doesn't make it a complete food... a one-ingredient treat plainly isn't one. We're mentioning it because we read the labels, and if you want it confirmed off the bag, ask us.
