Stella & Chewy's FreshMade Meat-A-Palooza Gently Cooked Dog Food

Sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen in a 16 oz pouch. The richest recipe in the FreshMade line, and the one with the most going on in the ingredient list.

Read this before you buy: it lives in the freezer

FreshMade is frozen, not refrigerated and not shelf-stable. Stella's own instructions:

• Store in the freezer
• Thaw in the refrigerator, in the original pouch
• Allow 24 to 36 hours to thaw completely
• Use within 5 days of thawing

That 24 to 36 hours catches people out. You can't decide at dinnertime to feed this... you have to pull a pouch the day before. If that doesn't suit your routine, Stella's freeze-dried patties sit in the cupboard and rehydrate in minutes.

And because it's frozen, it's pickup or local delivery only. We can't ship it.

Four animal species, two of them named

Stella's published order: Beef, Pork, butternut squash, sweet potato, kale, beef bone broth, Lamb, beef liver... and salmon oil further down.

Pork is the second ingredient. Lamb is seventh. Neither appears in the product name, and the bullets describe it only as "a meaty mix of red meats."

For a dog that eats everything, four species is genuine variety and that's the whole point of the recipe. If you're avoiding pork, lamb or fish, this is the wrong pouch, and the name won't tell you. Come and talk to us.

What it genuinely is: poultry-free. No chicken, no turkey, no duck anywhere in the list. That's checkable and it's a real reason to pick this one.

The richest FreshMade, by a margin

9.5% fat and 1,467 kcal/kg, both the highest in the line:

More than twice the fat of the two poultry recipes. That suits an active dog or a hard keeper. A dog with a pancreatitis history, or one on a vet-prescribed low-fat diet, needs that vet's view first... Chick-A-Lick'n at 4% fat is the gentle end of this line.

Being the densest also means it goes furthest: 657 calories a pouch against 458 for the chicken, so you buy fewer pouches for the same calories.

10% protein is not what it looks like

This is 75% moisture. Take the water out and the 10% protein becomes roughly 40% on a dry-matter basis, which is in kibble territory. Wet and frozen foods always read low against kibble because of the water. Compare like with like.

Adult dogs only, as a complete meal

Stella's wording is specific: serve as a complete and balanced meal for adult dogs, or topper for all dogs.

So a puppy can have it on top of a complete puppy food, but Stella does not position this as a puppy diet. Their Pork & Quinoa and Beef, Barley & Turkey recipes are the two FreshMade options described for all life stages.

What "gently cooked" means here

Stella's own description: packed in BPA-free pouches, gently sous-vide cooked, then flash frozen to preserve taste and nutrition. Sous vide means sealed and cooked slowly at a controlled low temperature.

Practically, it sits between raw and kibble: cooked, so it isn't raw, but minimally processed and never extruded into a dry pellet. If raw makes you uneasy but you want something closer to real food than kibble, this is the category that answers that.

Stella states FreshMade is reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Feeding guidelines, adult dogs

As a topper: Stella's rate is ¾ oz, about 1½ tablespoons, per 10 lbs of body weight per day. Take those calories off the food underneath.

Worth doing the arithmetic before you commit: a 30 lb dog eats a whole pouch a day as a complete diet. As a topper, one pouch lasts that dog about a week.

Size

16 oz BPA-free pouch.

On the label statement

Stella describes this as complete and balanced for adult dogs and says it's reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, but publishes no AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement and names no life stage in AAFCO terms on their page. We checked twice. Ask us and we'll read it off the pouch.
