Stella & Chewy's Absolutely Rabbit Freeze-Dried Raw Dinner Patties

Two animal ingredients in the whole recipe: rabbit with ground bone, and rabbit liver. That is the entire protein content, and it is why people come looking for this bag.

A genuine single protein

No chicken, no beef, no turkey, no fish, no egg, no lamb. If you are working through an elimination diet with your vet, or your dog has reacted to the usual proteins, a list this short is the point of the product.

It's worth saying that not every Stella recipe works that way. Their Duck Duck Goose patties list turkey second and three turkey organs in the top six, despite the name. This one is rabbit, full stop.

90%, not 95%, and we're not going to round it

Stella's chicken and beef patties are described as 95% meat, organs and bone. This one is described as 90% rabbit and bone.

Two differences in that one line. The percentage is five points lower, and the wording is "rabbit and bone" rather than "meat, organs and bone." Most retailers quietly print 95% on this page because the rest of the line says 95%. We're printing what Stella actually publishes.

The organ list is the shortest in the line

Rabbit liver, and that's it. For comparison, Stella's chicken recipe lists liver and gizzard; the Super Beef lists liver, kidney, heart and tripe.

If organ content is specifically why you feed raw, that matters and you should know it before you pay novel-protein prices. If you're here because your dog can't eat anything else, it's beside the point... the single protein is what you're buying.

Olive oil, second ingredient

Olive oil sits in the number two position in this recipe and appears in none of Stella's other freeze-dried patty recipes.

We're flagging it as a composition fact, not making a claim about it. A fat source high in the list is simply a structural difference worth noticing, particularly if you're comparing this to another bag line by line.

Where it sits on richness

46% protein, 32% fat, 4,780 kcal/kg. Second-leanest in the patty line, behind only the chicken.

Recipe Protein Fat kcal/kg kcal/patty
Chewy's Chicken 48% 28% 4,420 60
Absolutely Rabbit 46% 32% 4,780 53
Stella's Super Beef 41% 35% 4,940 56
Tantalizing Turkey 40% 36% 5,100 58
Duck Duck Goose 38% 38% 5,370 60

Notice that the rabbit patties are 53 kcal each, the smallest per-patty count in the line. A rabbit patty is a smaller unit of food than a chicken one, so a dog needs more of them. By Stella's charts a 100 lb dog eats 22½ rabbit patties a day against 21 chicken ones.

That's the part people get wrong when they switch to this bag and keep counting out the same number of patties.

One thing about the feeding chart

Stella's chart for this recipe starts at 10 lb, where the chicken patty chart starts at 5 lb. There is no published amount for a dog under 10 lb.

We're not going to invent one. If you have a 6 lb dog and you want this food, ask us or your vet rather than scaling the 10 lb row down by eye.

The probiotics, named

Four fermentation products in the list: Pediococcus acidilactici, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Bacillus coagulans.

Full ingredient list

Rabbit with Ground Bone, Olive Oil, Rabbit Liver, Pumpkin Seed, Organic Cranberries, Organic Spinach, Organic Broccoli, Organic Beets, Organic Carrots, Organic Squash, Organic Blueberries, Fenugreek Seed, Potassium Chloride, Dried Kelp, Sodium Phosphate, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative), Choline Chloride, Dried Pediococcus Acidilactici fermentation product, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus fermentation product, Dried Bifidobacterium Longum fermentation product, Dried Bacillus Coagulans fermentation product, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Taurine, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin E Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Niacin Supplement, D-calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid.

Reproduced exactly as Stella & Chewy's publishes it. One note on reading these lists carefully: this published list does not include sodium selenite, which Stella's chicken and beef lists do. We mention it only because we compare them line by line, and we would point out that Stella's published turkey list was also missing a mineral that the actual bag panel does carry. So we draw no conclusion from it either way, and neither should you... if it matters to you, ask us and we'll read the bag.

Feeding guidelines

Stella's published amounts for adult dogs, patties per day, split across two meals.

Your dog's weight Patties per day
10 lb 4
15 lb 5½
20 lb 6½
40 lb 11½
60 lb 15½
80 lb 19
100 lb 22½

Stella notes puppies may need up to twice the adult amount, and to consult a veterinarian for pregnant and nursing dogs. Treat the chart as a starting point, check body condition after two or three weeks, and adjust.

Also on the label

Farm-raised rabbit. Grain free, with no potatoes, peas, lentils or by-product meals, and no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Organic fruits and vegetables, added taurine, fortified with vitamins and minerals. Crafted in the USA in small batches from responsibly sourced ingredients.

How to serve it

Straight from the bag or rehydrated with warm water. Stella suggests bone broth as the liquid if you want to go further, and we carry their Bountiful Bone Broth.

Shelf-stable, no refrigeration needed.

Switching over

Stella's guidance is to introduce gradually across seven to ten days, mixing with the current food and shifting the ratio. They note that sudden diet changes and overfeeding can both cause digestive issues.

On the label statement

Stella & Chewy's does not publish the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement or the life stage for this product on their website, so we can't tell you from here whether it's labeled for adult maintenance, all life stages, or intermittent feeding. Their marketing copy does describe the recipe as suitable for dogs of all life stages, but that is not the same thing as an AAFCO all-life-stages statement and we won't present it as one. Ask us and we'll read the bag.
