Instinct RawBoost+ Kibble Real Salmon Recipe

RawBoost+ Real Salmon is the fish side of Instinct's grain-free RawBoost line. The kibble is built on wild-caught salmon and fish meals, and Instinct mixes in pieces of freeze-dried raw beef, which it calls FreshDried™ Raw. For a dog who needs to stay away from chicken, it is one of the easier RawBoost recipes to work with.

What's actually in it

Salmon is the first ingredient, followed by menhaden fish meal and white fish meal, so the protein in the kibble itself is almost all fish. The freeze-dried raw pieces are a different story: beef, beef liver, beef spleen and beef kidneys. There is no chicken anywhere on the list, and the fat comes from canola oil and salmon oil rather than chicken fat.

It is grain-free, with peas, tapioca, sweet potatoes and chickpeas as the starches. Fish and salmon oil bring omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat, and Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health. Glucosamine is guaranteed on the label.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult dog who does well on fish, and it is a handy choice for a dog avoiding chicken. Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large size dogs, so a small or medium breed puppy can eat it too.

Instinct® RawBoost™ High-Protein Recipe with Real Salmon is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages except for growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,719 kcal/kg ... 444 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,719 kcal/kg; 444 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. For dogs over 100 lb, Instinct says to add up to ¾ cup for every 20 lb. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter RawBoost+ mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all RawBoost+. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

3.5 lb and 19 lb bags, which hold roughly 13 and 72 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 6 days and about 5 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
