Instinct Original Kibble Real Chicken Recipe

Instinct Original Real Chicken is the bag that put Instinct on the map: a high-protein, grain-free kibble with every piece coated in freeze-dried raw chicken. Instinct says it is 70% real animal ingredients and nutritious oils, and it starts with cage-free chicken.

What's actually in it

Chicken, chicken meal and chicken fat are three of the first four ingredients, and herring meal and menhaden fish meal add more protein. The raw coating is freeze-dried chicken, chicken liver and chicken heart. At 37% minimum protein and 20% minimum fat, it is a rich food.

It is grain-free and potato-free, with peas and tapioca as the main starches. Instinct adds a Bacillus coagulans probiotic to support digestive health, and guarantees omega fatty acids and vitamin C.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an active adult dog who does well on chicken and a high-protein, high-fat diet. The bag is marked "All Life Stages".

It isn't right for a dog avoiding chicken or fish, or for a less active dog who gains weight easily. Calorie content

4,430 kcal/kg ... 520 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): Metabolizable Energy 4,430 kcal/kg; 520 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Instinct adds: puppies, feed up to twice the adult maintenance amount; pregnant or nursing females, feed up to three times the adult maintenance amount. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Instinct Original mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Instinct Original. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

22.5 lb bag, which holds roughly 87 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 6 weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
