Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Lamb (lamb meal, lamb, freeze-dried lamb, freeze-dried lamb liver, freeze-dried lamb spleen, freeze-dried lamb heart, freeze-dried lamb kidney).
- Contains: Lamb ... Peas and pea protein (legume).
- Does not contain: Chicken, turkey, beef, fish, egg, dairy, grains, potatoes, sweet potato, chickpeas, corn, wheat, soy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Rich food, small scoops. At 495 kcal per cup, with more fat (21.5%) than most kibbles, it is easy to overfeed. Peas appear twice (peas and pea protein).

Limited Ingredient Diet Real Lamb is Instinct's single-protein kibble for dogs with food sensitivities. Instinct builds it on grass-fed lamb and one vegetable (peas), and coats each piece in freeze-dried raw lamb and lamb organs.
What's actually in it
Lamb meal and lamb lead, followed by tapioca, peas and canola oil. The raw coating is lamb too: freeze-dried lamb, liver, spleen, heart and kidney. It is one of the few kibbles we carry that is truly single animal protein, with no chicken fat, fish oil or egg.
It is grain-free and potato-free. Pea protein is added, which raises the protein figure, so keep that in mind if you are avoiding legumes. Instinct guarantees omega fatty acids and vitamin C, which it includes to support skin, coat and immune health. If your dog has a diagnosed food allergy, work with your veterinarian on any diet change.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits an adult dog with food sensitivities, including dogs who react to chicken, beef or fish. It is a good choice for a lamb-only trial.
It isn't the bag for a dog who reacts to lamb or peas, or a dog who needs a lower-fat food. Calorie content
4,315 kcal/kg ... 495 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): Metabolizable Energy 4,315 kcal/kg; 495 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Limited Ingredient Diet mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Limited Ingredient Diet. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
21 lb bag, which holds roughly 83 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 5 weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
