Instinct Original Paté Real Duck Recipe Wet Cat Food

Duck is a richer, slightly gamier protein that many cats find hard to resist, and it's a handy choice for families rotating away from chicken. Instinct's Original Paté Real Duck Recipe is a grain-free paté that Instinct describes as 95% duck and turkey liver with 5% vegetables, fruits and other ingredients.

What's actually in it

Cage-free duck is the first ingredient, with duck broth for moisture and turkey liver for a nutrient-dense organ meat. Menhaden fish oil and ground flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat. Peas and carrots are the main vegetables, with a small blend of cranberries, pumpkin, tomato, blueberries, broccoli, kale and parsley near the end.

Instinct says the recipe is made without grain, potato, corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors or preservatives.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an adult cat who enjoys a smooth paté and a family looking for a chicken-free and egg-free canned food. It's also a nice rotation flavor next to a chicken or salmon can.

Ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight, and activity level. Refrigerate any unused portion.

Instinct's label doesn't say which can size the amounts refer to, so go by the label on the can in hand.

Treat the label as a starting point. Serve at room temperature, split the day's amount into meals, and always keep fresh water out. If you feed wet alongside kibble, trim both so the day's total doesn't creep up. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Instinct Duck Paté mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Instinct Duck Paté. Cats can be particular, so if yours hesitates, slow down rather than skipping ahead. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust.

5.5 oz cans, sold one at a time or in a case of 12. The label Instinct publishes is from the 3 oz can and doesn't say which size its feeding amounts are for, so we haven't worked out a days-per-case figure... the 5.5 oz can's own label gives the daily amount.

Storage

Instinct's direction is to serve at room temperature and refrigerate any unused portion. Cover the opened can and use it within a few days. Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry.
