Instinct Original Real Chicken Recipe Wet Dog Food

Instinct Original Real Chicken is a grain-free loaf from Instinct, made by Nature's Variety, built around poultry. Instinct says the recipe is 95% chicken, turkey and chicken liver (not counting the broth) and 5% vegetables, fruits and other ingredients. For a dog who wants a meaty, simple can, it's an easy one to like.

What's actually in it

Cage-free chicken leads, with turkey, chicken broth and chicken liver right behind it. Liver is a nutrient-dense organ meat and gives the loaf a rich flavor. Egg product adds a little more animal protein.

There's no grain and no potato. Peas and carrots are the main vegetables, followed by a short run of fruits and greens (artichokes, cranberries, pumpkin, tomato, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, kale and parsley) that sit at the very end of the list in small amounts. Ground flaxseed and menhaden fish oil add omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat. Montmorillonite clay is a natural clay that helps give the loaf its texture.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an adult dog of any size who likes poultry and does well on a grain-free can, either as the whole meal or spooned over kibble. Instinct's feeding guide includes amounts for puppies and nursing mothers too, but because the AAFCO statement isn't published online, check the can before making it a puppy's only food.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published guide, word for word:

• Adults: Feed ¾ to 1¼ cans per 15 lbs of body weight per day.
• Puppies: Feed up to twice the adult amount per day.
• Pregnant/Nursing Females: Feed up to three times the adult amount per day.
• Refrigerate unused portion.

Worked out from that guide: a 15 lb adult gets ¾ to 1¼ cans a day, a 30 lb adult 1½ to 2½ cans, and a 60 lb adult 3 to 5 cans. These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts vary by age, weight and activity level. If you also feed kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh, clean water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Original Real Chicken mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Original Real Chicken. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how long a case lasts

Sold as a single 13.2 oz can or a 6-pack. For a 30 lb adult eating Instinct's 1½ to 2½ cans a day with nothing else, a 6-pack lasts roughly two and a half to four days. Used as a topper over kibble, it goes much further. Our listing says 13 oz; Instinct's current can is 13.2 oz.

Storage

Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Instinct's direction is to feed at room temperature and refrigerate any unused portion. Cover the opened can and use it within a few days.
