Instinct BeNatural Kibble Real Salmon & Brown Rice Recipe

BeNatural Real Salmon & Brown Rice is the fish recipe in Instinct's grain-inclusive BeNatural line. Real salmon is the first ingredient, whole grains replace peas and potatoes, and each piece is tumbled in freeze-dried raw fish.

What's actually in it

Salmon leads, followed by chicken meal, then oatmeal, barley and brown rice. Chicken fat, fish meal, sorghum and salmon oil come next. Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat.

Instinct tumbles each piece in freeze-dried raw pollock (a mild white fish). Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health. There are no peas, lentils or potatoes in this recipe.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult dog who loves fish and does fine on chicken, and families who want a grain-inclusive, legume-free food. Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large size dogs.

Instinct® BeNatural™ Real Salmon & Brown Rice Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages except for growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,750 kcal/kg ... 412 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,750 kcal/kg; 412 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Instinct adds: pregnant or nursing females, feed up to three times the adult maintenance amount; puppies (except large breed, 70 lb or more as an adult), feed up to twice the adult maintenance amount; dogs over 100 lb, add up to ¾ cup for every 20 lb. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter BeNatural mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all BeNatural. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

24 lb bag, which holds roughly 99 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2½ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 6 weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
