Instinct BeNatural Kibble Real Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe

BeNatural is Instinct's grain-inclusive everyday line, and Real Chicken & Brown Rice is the classic of the bunch. It starts with cage-free chicken, uses whole grains instead of peas and potatoes, and Instinct tumbles each piece in freeze-dried raw fish for flavor.

What's actually in it

Chicken and chicken meal lead, followed by four grains: barley, sorghum, oatmeal and brown rice. Chicken fat, turkey meal and fish meal round out the protein side. At 25% minimum protein it is a moderate-protein food.

Instinct tumbles each piece in freeze-dried raw pollock (a mild white fish). Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health, and ground flaxseed brings omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat. There are no peas, lentils or potatoes in this recipe.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult dog of most sizes, and families who prefer a grain-inclusive, legume-free food. Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large size dogs, so a small or medium puppy can eat it too.

Instinct® BeNatural™ Real Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages except for growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,728 kcal/kg ... 424 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,728 kcal/kg; 424 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Instinct adds: pregnant or nursing females, feed up to three times the adult maintenance amount; puppies (except large breed, 70 lb or more as an adult), feed up to twice the adult maintenance amount; dogs over 100 lb, add up to ¾ cup for every 20 lb. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter BeNatural mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all BeNatural. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

25 lb bag, which holds roughly 100 level cups. For a 50 lb adult eating 2½ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about 6 weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
