Instinct RawBoost+ Kibble for Small Breed Dogs Real Chicken Recipe

RawBoost+ for Small Breed Dogs is the little-mouth version of Instinct's grain-free chicken kibble. Instinct made it for small breeds, with guaranteed calcium and phosphorus and the same freeze-dried raw chicken pieces dogs go looking for in the regular RawBoost bag.

What's actually in it

Chicken and chicken meal lead, followed by chicken fat. Fish meal and turkey meal are in the top eight, and the freeze-dried raw chicken, chicken liver and chicken heart are mixed in. At 32% minimum protein and 18% minimum fat it is a rich food, which is why the cup amounts for a small dog are so small.

It is grain-free, with peas, tapioca, sweet potatoes and chickpeas as the starches. Instinct guarantees calcium and phosphorus, which it includes to support strong bones and teeth, and glucosamine and chondroitin are guaranteed too. Salmon oil and flaxseed bring omega fatty acids, and Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy small breed adult (Instinct's chart runs from 2 to 30 lb) with no food sensitivities. Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large size dogs, so a small breed puppy can eat it too.

Instinct® RawBoost™ High-Protein Recipe with Real Chicken for Small Breed Dogs is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages except for growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,790 kcal/kg ... 423 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,790 kcal/kg; 423 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Spayed or neutered and less active dogs often need the lower end of the range. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter RawBoost+ Small Breed mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all RawBoost+ Small Breed. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

3.5 lb bag, which holds roughly 14 level cups. For a 20 lb adult eating 1¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's adult range), that's about a week and a half. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
