RawBoost+ Whole Grain for Puppies is Instinct's grain-inclusive puppy food. It starts with cage-free chicken, uses whole grains instead of peas and potatoes, and mixes in the freeze-dried raw chicken pieces that RawBoost is known for.

What's actually in it

Chicken and chicken meal lead, followed by barley, turkey meal, oatmeal, brown rice and sorghum. Salmon oil sits in the top eleven, and Instinct guarantees DHA, which it includes to support brain and eye development, plus calcium and phosphorus for growing bones and teeth.

There are no peas, lentils or potatoes. Instinct adds a probiotic blend to support digestive health, and glucosamine and chondroitin are guaranteed on the label.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a growing puppy of any size. Instinct's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, so it is a sound choice for a Lab or shepherd puppy too.

Instinct® RawBoost™ Whole Grain Real Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe for Puppies is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages including growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,730 kcal/kg ... 411 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 3,730 kcal/kg; 411 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published daily amounts, by your puppy's current weight and age. Split the total across three or four meals for young puppies, then two.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Puppies grow fast, so weigh yours every couple of weeks and move up the chart as needed. At 12 months, Instinct says to transition to its RawBoost kibble for dogs. Check body condition as you go... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter RawBoost+ Whole Grain Puppy mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all RawBoost+ Whole Grain Puppy. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4.5 lb bag, which holds roughly 19 level cups. How long a bag lasts changes month to month as your puppy grows. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food. Because Instinct includes freeze-dried raw ingredients, wash your hands after handling the food and wash your dog's bowl after each meal.
