Instinct RawBoost+ Shakers Gut Health Recipe Freeze-Dried Dog Food Topper

Instinct RawBoost+ Shakers Gut Health Recipe Freeze-Dried Dog Food Topper

RawBoost+ Shakers Gut Health is freeze-dried raw chicken ground into a fine powder you shake over dinner. Sprinkle it on dry for a flavor dusting, or stir in warm water for a quick gravy that coats every piece of kibble. Instinct built this flavor around digestion, with pumpkin, chicory root and a probiotic.

What's actually in it

Chicken (including ground chicken bone), chicken liver and chicken heart lead the list. Dried pumpkin, pumpkin seeds, sweet potato and chicory root add fiber, which Instinct includes to help maintain digestive health, and Bacillus coagulans is a live probiotic which Instinct includes for the same reason. Apple cider vinegar is in the mix too. Annatto extract adds color, and mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract keep it fresh. Instinct says its frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes are made in its company-owned facilities in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits picky eaters on kibble, dogs that enjoy a gravy, and families who want a light raw boost without switching foods. A dog with ongoing stomach trouble should see a veterinarian rather than rely on a topper.

It isn't the right choice for a dog avoiding chicken, and it is not a meal on its own. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

AAFCO statement

This product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Use as part of your dog's healthy feeding plan.

Calorie content

4,555 kcal/kg ... 23 kcal per tablespoon (Instinct's label: "4,555 kcal/kg; 23 kcal/tbsp"). Two tablespoons over a cup of food adds about 46 kcal.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's directions are to add RawBoost Shakers to your dog's current food and to reduce the calorie amount of that food accordingly to avoid overfeeding. Two ways to serve it, per Instinct:

• Sprinkle ... shake 2 tablespoons of powder for every 1 cup of your dog's food.
• Mix ... add equal parts warm water and powder for a tasty gravy.

Instinct does not publish amounts by dog weight, so let the size of the meal guide you. Always keep fresh water out.

Safe handling

Freeze-dried raw is still raw. Instinct's own direction: "As with all food products, care should be taken in storing and handling. Wash your hands and bowls before and after serving." If you make the gravy, serve it right away and discard what's left within two hours, as Instinct advises for rehydrated freeze-dried food.

Switching over

Start small. A light sprinkle of RawBoost+ Shakers Gut Health Recipe on the first few meals lets you see how your dog's stomach handles it, and you can build up from there over a week or so. Instinct reminds owners to cut back the main food a little to make room for the extra calories.

Sizes

5.5 oz shaker. Roughly 31 tablespoons per shaker, enough to top about 15 cups of food at Instinct's 2 tablespoons per cup. Counts are worked out from Instinct's printed calorie figures and are close estimates.

Storage

Instinct's directions: keep the package sealed to maintain freshness and store it in a cool, dry place. Once opened, Instinct says its freeze-dried food stays fresh for up to 30 days as long as it's resealed between uses.
