Instinct Original Real Beef Recipe Wet Dog Food

Instinct Original Real Beef is a grain-free beef loaf from Instinct, made by Nature's Variety. Instinct says USA-raised beef is the first ingredient, and that the recipe is 95% beef and liver (not counting the broth) and 5% vegetables, fruits and other ingredients. It's one of the richer cans we carry, and a good pick for a dog who loves red meat.

What's actually in it

Beef, beef broth and beef liver are the first three ingredients, so the loaf is built almost entirely on one meat. Liver is a nutrient-dense organ meat and gives it a deep, savory flavor. A little dried egg product adds more animal protein.

There's no grain, no potato and no chicken. Peas and carrots are the main vegetables, followed by a short run of fruits and greens (artichokes, cranberries, pumpkin, tomato, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, kale and parsley) in small amounts at the end of the list. Ground flaxseed and menhaden fish oil add omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat. Montmorillonite clay is a natural clay that helps give the loaf its texture.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an adult dog of any size who does well on a grain-free can, and families steering away from chicken and turkey. It works as a full meal or as a spoonful over kibble. Instinct's feeding guide includes amounts for puppies and nursing mothers, but because the AAFCO statement isn't published online, check the can before making it a puppy's only food.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's published guide, word for word:

• Adults: Feed ¾ can per 15 lbs of body weight per day.
• Puppies: Feed up to twice the adult maintenance amount shown above.
• Pregnant/Nursing Females: Feed up to three times the adult maintenance amount shown above.
• Refrigerate unused portion.
• Ideal feeding amounts will vary by age, weight, and activity level so the guide above should be used as an initial recommendation.

Worked out from that guide: a 15 lb adult gets ¾ can a day, a 30 lb adult 1½ cans, and a 60 lb adult 3 cans. These are starting points, not prescriptions. If you also feed kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh, clean water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Original Real Beef mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Original Real Beef. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how long a case lasts

Sold as a 6-pack of 13.2 oz cans. For a 30 lb adult eating Instinct's 1½ cans a day with nothing else, a 6-pack lasts about four days. Used as a topper over kibble, it goes much further.

Storage

Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Instinct's direction is to feed at room temperature and refrigerate any unused portion. Cover the opened can and use it within a few days.
