The sampler is the low-commitment way to find out which FreshRaw Meals recipe your dog likes best. You get six 8 oz frozen packages across Instinct's four recipes, so you can rotate through them and see which one gets the happiest reaction at the bowl.

What's actually in it

Every recipe follows the same pattern: a responsibly sourced meat first, organ meats behind it, then carrots, spinach, blueberries, apples, sweet potatoes and butternut squash. Instinct says the meals are never cooked, cold-pressured for safety, and made with no white rice, pasta or potato fillers. Salmon oil and ground flaxseed in each recipe add omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult dog without known food sensitivities whose family is curious about raw, or a raw feeder who wants to try the FreshRaw line before buying a single recipe in bulk.

Calorie content

Instinct's sampler label prints calories for each recipe (calculated, ME):

A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Instinct's sampler label gives daily amounts for each recipe, by your dog's weight. Because the recipes differ in calories, the amount changes a little as you rotate. Cups per day:

Cups are a standard 8 oz dry measuring cup. Instinct notes that ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight and activity level. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Even within one brand, a new protein is a change. Go gradually over about a week, starting with a quarter FreshRaw mixed into the current food, then half, then three quarters. Once your dog is settled, you can rotate between the sampler recipes.

Sizes

One box of six 8 oz frozen packages. For a 20 lb adult, Instinct's chart works out to roughly 1¼ to 2¼ packages a day depending on the recipe, so the box covers about three to five days of full raw feeding, or much longer as a topper.

Storage and safe handling

Keep the packages in the freezer until you need them, and move the next one to the refrigerator ahead of time. Instinct's label says: "Thaw in the fridge for 12 hours. Once thawed, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 3 days. Discard uneaten food 30 minutes after serving. Wash hands and utensils with hot, soapy water after handling raw pet food."

Raw food needs the same care as raw meat in your own kitchen, so wash your dog's bowl with hot, soapy water after each meal and keep raw food away from counters where people's food is made.
