Know Before You Buy

FreshRaw Meals are Instinct's newest frozen raw format: ground raw food in a ready-to-serve package, built for families who want to feed fresh without cooking or measuring meat themselves. The grass-fed beef recipe is the classic starting point.
What's actually in it
Grass-fed beef is first, then beef liver and beef kidney, so every animal ingredient except the salmon oil comes from beef. Carrots, spinach, blueberries, apples, sweet potatoes and butternut squash bring the produce, and Instinct says there are no white rice, pasta or potato fillers.
Instinct says the recipe is never cooked and is cold-pressured for safety, then frozen. Salmon oil and ground flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat, and Instinct says the line is formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog who does well on beef, and families ready to try raw in a simple, portioned format. It also works as a topper over kibble if you want to start small.
Instinct's AAFCO statement is for adult maintenance, so it isn't meant as a puppy's main diet. It isn't for a dog avoiding beef, and households with very young children or anyone with a weakened immune system should think carefully about handling raw meat. Calorie content
1,480 kcal/kg ... 42 kcal per oz ... 352 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 1,480 kcal/kg; 42 kcal/oz; 352 kcal/cup; 336 kcal/pack"). Instinct's sampler label gives 336 kcal per 8 oz package, so a 16 oz package is about 672 kcal by our math from the per-ounce figure. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight, in cups or in whole packages. Split the total across two meals.

Cups are a standard 8 oz dry measuring cup. The 8 oz pack column is from Instinct's sampler label and the 16 oz column from this recipe's own label. Instinct notes that ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight and activity level, and its chart stops at "51 lb +", so for a bigger dog start at the top figure and adjust. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter FreshRaw Meals mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all FreshRaw Meals. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust, and that matters even more when the move is from kibble to raw.
Sizes
8 oz and 16 oz frozen packages, which hold roughly 1 and 2 cups. For a 20 lb adult eating 1¾ cups a day (the top of Instinct's 16 to 25 lb range), a 16 oz package covers about 1 day. The 8 oz size is handy for a small dog or for trying raw as a topper. Instinct also sells these by the box. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates.
Storage and safe handling
Keep the packages in the freezer until you need them, and move the next one to the refrigerator ahead of time. Instinct's label says: "Thaw in the fridge for 24 hours. Once thawed, refrigerate in a sealed container for up to 3 days. Discard uneaten food 30 minutes after serving. Wash hands and utensils with hot, soapy water after handling raw pet food."
Raw food needs the same care as raw meat in your own kitchen, so wash your dog's bowl with hot, soapy water after each meal and keep raw food away from counters where people's food is made.
