Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Pollock, beef kidney, beef spleen, beef liver, beef heart, beef, salmon oil.
- Contains: Fish (pollock, salmon oil) ... Beef ... Pumpkin seeds.
- Does not contain: Chicken, grains, peas, lentils or other legumes, potatoes, egg, dairy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a fish-only diet. Pollock is first, but the next five ingredients are all beef: kidney, spleen, liver, heart and beef itself.
- Life stage: Adult maintenance. Instinct's AAFCO statement is for maintenance only, so it isn't formulated as a growing puppy's diet.
FreshRaw Bites are small frozen raw nuggets that pour out of the bag and thaw quickly, and the wild-caught pollock recipe is the fish choice in the line. It's built on Instinct's 85% meat and organs, 15% produce formula.
What's actually in it
Pollock is the first ingredient, and then come beef kidney, beef spleen, beef liver, beef heart and beef, so this is a fish and beef recipe. Carrots, apples, butternut squash, pumpkin seeds, blueberries and spinach make up the rest. Instinct states it's made without grain, corn, wheat, soy or legumes.
Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, which Instinct includes to support skin and coat, and Instinct lists omega 3 and omega 6 minimums on the analysis. Mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract help keep it fresh. It has the lowest fat minimum of the FreshRaw Bites at 5%.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog who enjoys fish and does fine with beef, and families who like the pour-and-serve ease of bites. A handful also makes a simple topper.

Instinct® FreshRaw™ Bites Wild-Caught Pollock Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.
Calorie content
1,171 kcal/kg ... 157 kcal per cup (Instinct's label: "Calorie content (calculated): ME = 1,171 kcal/kg; 157 kcal/cup"). A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Instinct's published daily amounts, by your dog's weight. Split the total across the day's meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Instinct notes that ideal feeding amounts depend on age, weight and activity level, and measures in a standard 8 oz dry measuring cup. Instinct's chart stops at "51 lb +", so for a bigger dog start at the top figure and adjust from there. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter FreshRaw Bites mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all FreshRaw Bites. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust, and that matters even more when the move is from kibble to raw.
Sizes
We carry the 5.4 lb bag (Instinct also packs a 2.7 lb bag). It holds roughly 18 level cups. For a 20 lb adult eating 3¼ cups a day (the top of Instinct's 16 to 25 lb range), a 5.4 lb bag lasts about 6 days. Cup counts are worked out from Instinct's published calorie figures and are close estimates.
Storage and safe handling
Keep the bag in the freezer. Instinct's label says: "Keep frozen until your pet's mealtime. Bites thaw in minutes and should be cold to the touch when served." Pour out only what the meal needs and put the bag straight back in the freezer.
Raw food needs the same care as raw meat in your own kitchen. Instinct's label says: "Discard uneaten food 30 minutes after serving. Wash hands and utensils after handling raw pet food." Wash your dog's bowl with hot, soapy water after each meal too.
