Frommbo Gumbo is Fromm having fun: thick cuts of pork sausage, rich bone broth, potatoes and carrots in a hearty stew. Fromm makes the sausage in Wisconsin, where Fromm Family Foods has been family owned for generations. Even with the party-time name, it's a complete and balanced food for all life stages, so it can be the whole meal or a topper.

What's actually in it

Pork, bone broth and pork broth lead the list, then potatoes, carrots, pinto beans and green beans. Pork liver and dried egg product follow, with peas, and a little roasted barley flour sits near the end.

Fromm doesn't publish a separate recipe for the sausage itself, so the real proteins are the animal ingredients on the full list above. Fromm also doesn't say which animal the "bone broth" comes from. Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and turmeric and parsley appear in small amounts. Tapioca starch and xanthan gum thicken the stew.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits dogs of any age who like big, chunky pieces, including large breed puppies, since the AAFCO statement covers all life stages. It's a fun rotation can for a dog who gets bored easily.

It isn't the right can for a dog avoiding pork, egg, fish or legumes, and the roasted barley flour means it isn't grain-free. Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your dog's ideal weight, when this is the only food. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve this alongside kibble, cut both back so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Frommbo Gumbo mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Frommbo Gumbo. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how long a case lasts

Sold by the single can or in cases of 12. Fromm's chart has a 20 lb dog eating about 1⅕ cans a day as its only food, so a case lasts that dog about 10 days. Used as a topper, it goes much further. These are close estimates worked out from Fromm's chart.

Storage

Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days. Unopened cans keep best somewhere cool and dry.
