Know Before You Buy

Some cats want a pâté and some want something they can pick through. This PurrSnickitty stew is for the second kind... tender pieces of duck cooked in a savory chicken and turkey broth, made by Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin. It's a grain-free recipe with a short ingredient list and a lot of broth.
What's actually in it
Duck is the first ingredient, followed by chicken broth and turkey broth, then duck liver and dried egg product. So while duck is the star, the broth that makes it a stew comes from chicken and turkey. Pea flour is the only starch. Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Agar-agar and xanthan gum thicken the broth, and taurine, vitamins and minerals round it out. The label also lists natural flavor, and Fromm doesn't name its source.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a picky cat of any age who likes chunks and gravy more than a smooth pâté. It's grain-free, and because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, it can be fed as a complete meal to kittens and adults, not just spooned on top as a treat.

Fromm's published daily amounts, in ounces of food per day, by your cat's current weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

Each can holds 3 oz, so 10 oz a day works out to about 3⅓ cans if this is your cat's only food.
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that age, breed, weight and activity level all affect how much a cat needs. Kittens, and cats that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. If you also feed dry food, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Duck Stew mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Duck Stew. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and gives a picky eater time to warm up to something new.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Sold by the single 3 oz can or a case of 12 (36 oz in all). For a 10 lb adult cat eating Fromm's 10 oz a day with nothing else, a case lasts about three and a half days. Fed alongside dry food, a case will go much further.
Storage
Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Once a can is open, cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
