Indoor cats live a different life from their outdoor cousins... more napping, more grooming, and often a little less exercise. Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, made this Gold pâté with a blend of select proteins and fibers specifically for adult indoor cats, and named it Indoor Cat Hairball Control to say so.

What's actually in it

Chicken leads three ways: chicken, chicken broth and chicken liver, with salmon fourth. White rice is the only grain. What sets this recipe apart is its fiber blend: ground miscanthus grass, psyllium seed husk, dried beet pulp, chicory root extract and alfalfa meal, which Fromm includes as part of its indoor and hairball positioning. Flaxseed, sunflower oil and salmon oil add fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and chicken cartilage appears near the end of the list. Taurine, vitamins and minerals complete it. Natural flavor is listed without a named source.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult cat who lives indoors, and families who like a grain-inclusive pâté. It pairs naturally with Fromm's Gold Indoor dry food if your cat eats both.

It isn't the right can for a kitten, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers adult maintenance only, or for a cat avoiding chicken or fish. 941 kcal/kg ... 80 kcal per 3 oz can (Fromm also lists 147 kcal per 5.5 oz can, a size we don't carry).

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

Fromm's cans-per-day column lines up with their larger 5.5 oz can. We carry the 3 oz can, so go by the ounces column: 10 oz a day for a 10 lb cat is about 3⅓ of our 3 oz cans.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that age, breed, weight and activity level all affect how much a cat needs. Kittens, and cats that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. If you also feed dry food, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Indoor mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Indoor. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and gives a picky eater time to warm up to something new.

Sizes, and how long a case lasts

Sold by the single 3 oz can or a case of 12 (36 oz in all). For a 10 lb cat eating Fromm's 10 oz a day with nothing else, a case lasts about three and a half days. Fed alongside dry food, a case will go much further.

Storage

Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Once a can is open, cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
