What's actually in it

Chicken broth leads, followed by chicken and chicken liver, then white rice and duck. Starting with broth is part of how the recipe keeps calories down while still filling the bowl. Potatoes, oatmeal and tomato paste add carbohydrates, and ground miscanthus grass and chicory root extract add fiber. Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Chicken cartilage, taurine, vitamins and minerals round it out.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult cat who tends to gain weight easily, or a less active or spayed or neutered adult whose family wants a lower-calorie can. Fromm's stated purpose for this recipe is healthy weight, and it pairs with Fromm's Gold Healthy Weight dry food if your cat eats both.

It isn't the right can for a kitten, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers adult maintenance only, or for a cat avoiding chicken, duck or fish. Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

Fromm's cans-per-day column lines up with their larger 5.5 oz can. We carry the 3 oz can, so go by the ounces column: 10 oz a day for a 10 lb cat is about 3⅓ of our 3 oz cans.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that age, breed, weight and activity level all affect how much a cat needs. Kittens, and cats that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. If you also feed dry food, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Healthy Weight mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Healthy Weight. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and gives a picky eater time to warm up to something new.

Sizes, and how long a case lasts

Sold by the single 3 oz can or a case of 12 (36 oz in all). For a 10 lb cat eating Fromm's 10 oz a day with nothing else, a case lasts about three and a half days. Fed alongside dry food, a case will go much further.

Storage

Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Once a can is open, cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
