This is the everyday Gold can for grown-up cats... a smooth pâté that brings chicken, duck and salmon together in one recipe. Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, describes it as a balanced blend of select proteins and wholesome ingredients for adult cats. If your cat already eats Gold Adult dry, it's the natural wet companion.

What's actually in it

Chicken leads three ways: chicken, chicken broth and chicken liver. Duck and salmon follow, so all three named proteins are near the top of the list, though chicken does most of the work. Pearled barley, white rice and potatoes add carbohydrates, and tomato paste, ground miscanthus grass and chicory root extract come next. Salmon oil adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Chicken cartilage, taurine, vitamins and minerals complete it.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult cat with no known food sensitivities, and families who like a grain-inclusive pâté with some variety in its proteins. It works as a full meal or alongside dry food.

It isn't the right can for a kitten, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers adult maintenance only... Fromm's Gold Kitten pâté is made for that stage. It also isn't right for a cat avoiding chicken, duck or fish, and a cat that needs fewer calories may do better on Gold Healthy Weight. 980 kcal/kg ... 84 kcal per 3 oz can (Fromm also lists 153 kcal per 5.5 oz can, a size we don't carry).

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

Fromm's cans-per-day column lines up with their larger 5.5 oz can. We carry the 3 oz can, so go by the ounces column: 10 oz a day for a 10 lb cat is about 3⅓ of our 3 oz cans.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that age, breed, weight and activity level all affect how much a cat needs. Kittens, and cats that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. If you also feed dry food, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Adult. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and gives a picky eater time to warm up to something new.

Sizes, and how long a case lasts

Sold as a case of 12 3 oz cans (36 oz in all). For a 10 lb cat eating Fromm's 10 oz a day with nothing else, a case lasts about three and a half days. Fed alongside dry food, a case will go much further.

Storage

Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Once a can is open, cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
