Fromm Classic Puppy Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver, chicken cartilage), menhaden fish meal, egg, salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (pearled barley, oatmeal, brown rice, white rice) ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Corn, wheat, soy, beef, pork, lamb, peas, lentils or potatoes (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Chicken appears five ways. Chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver and chicken cartilage are all on the list, so this is not a choice for a chicken-sensitive puppy.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers gestation/lactation and growth, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Classic Puppy is a plain, grain-inclusive chicken recipe for a growing pup, and it covers big puppies as well as little ones. It is also cleared for pregnant and nursing mothers, so a breeder or a family with a new litter can feed mom and pups from the same bag.
What's actually in it
Chicken and chicken meal lead, and menhaden fish meal comes in fifth, higher than in the adult Classic recipes. Dried egg product, salmon oil, cheese, chicken liver and chicken cartilage complete the animal side. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat.
The grains are pearled barley, oatmeal, brown rice and white rice, with beet pulp for fiber, and there are no potatoes, peas or lentils. Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. At 28% minimum protein it runs a bit higher in protein than Classic Adult.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy puppy of almost any expected size, from toy breeds to dogs heading past 100 lb, because Fromm's AAFCO statement includes growth of large size dogs. It also suits a pregnant or nursing mother.
It isn't for a puppy that needs to avoid chicken, fish, egg or dairy. Once your dog reaches adult size, the feeding chart below shows where Fromm moves small dogs to an adult food. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

AAFCO statement
Fromm Family Classic Puppy Dog Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for gestation/lactation and growth, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
Calorie content
3,690 kcal/kg ... 1,677 kcal/lb ... 413 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by the weight your puppy is expected to reach as an adult and by age. Split the total across three or four meals for young puppies and two meals later on. Where Fromm's chart says Adult, it moves that size of dog to an adult food at that age; where a cell is blank, Fromm gives no puppy amount for that age.
| Expected adult weight | 6 to 11 weeks | 3 to 4 months | 5 to 7 months | 8 to 12 months | 12 to 18 months | 18 to 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 lb | ⅛ to ¼ cup | ¼ to ⅜ cup | ⅓ to ⅜ cup | Adult | Adult | Adult |
| 5 lb | ⅓ to ⅜ cup | ½ to ⅝ cup | ½ to ⅔ cup | Adult | Adult | Adult |
| 15 lb | ¾ to 1 cup | 1 to 1⅓ cups | 1⅛ to 1½ cups | 1 to 1⅓ cups | ||
| 30 lb | 1¼ to 1⅔ cups | 1⅔ to 2⅛ cups | 1⅞ to 2½ cups | 1¾ to 2⅓ cups | ||
| 50 lb | 1¾ to 2⅓ cups | 2½ to 3¼ cups | 2¾ to 3½ cups | 2⅔ to 3⅓ cups | ||
| 70 lb | 2⅓ to 3 cups | 2¾ to 3⅔ cups | 3⅛ to 4⅛ cups | 3½ to 4½ cups | 3½ to 4½ cups | 3⅓ to 4⅓ cups |
| 85 lb | 2¾ to 3½ cups | 3¼ to 4¼ cups | 3⅔ to 4¾ cups | 4 to 5¼ cups | 4 to 5¼ cups | 3⅞ to 5 cups |
| 100 lb | 3 to 4 cups | 3⅔ to 4¾ cups | 4⅛ to 5⅓ cups | 4½ to 6 cups | 4½ to 5¾ cups | 4⅓ to 5⅔ cups |
| Over 100 lb | Add ⅓ cup of food per each 10 lb of body weight over 100 lb | |||||
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Each range runs from a lower to a higher daily amount, so begin near the middle and watch your puppy rather than the bag. Fromm notes that pregnant or nursing dogs may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check body condition every couple of weeks while your puppy grows... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Classic Puppy mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Classic Puppy. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
5 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 20 and 122 level cups. For a puppy expected to reach 30 lb, eating about 2⅛ cups a day at three to four months, that's a little over a week and about eight weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
