Stella & Chewy's Raw Coated Biscuits, Grass-Fed Beef

Oven-baked biscuits coated in freeze-dried raw. The organ content is the best of the four biscuit recipes, and there are two species in here the name doesn't mention.

Five beef components, including tripe and bone

Beef, beef liver, beef kidney, beef heart, beef tripe and beef bone. For a baked biscuit that is a remarkable organ list... most treats in this category contain one meat and a lot of flour.

Stella's bullet says rich in organ meat, and unlike their duck biscuits, where the organ meat is all turkey, this one delivers on it with the animal on the label.

The only fat in them is lamb fat, and there's pork meal too

The published order, first nine:

  1. Beef
  2. Peas
  3. Chickpeas
  4. Beef Liver
  5. Lamb Fat
  6. Cane Molasses
  7. Pork Meal
  8. Sweet Potato
  9. Natural Vegetable Flavor

Lamb fat is the sole added fat in the recipe, and it sits at five, ahead of the pork meal at seven. Neither lamb nor pork is named anywhere on the product.

For most dogs that's irrelevant. If you're avoiding lamb or pork, or running an elimination diet, it isn't, and you wouldn't learn it from the name. Come and talk to us about what actually qualifies.

Also worth noting on wording: Stella's bullet says raw, grass-fed beef, but the ingredient panel lists plain Beef with no grass-fed qualifier.

There is sugar in these

Cane molasses sits at position six, in all four Raw Coated Biscuit recipes. It's there for binding and palatability and the amount is small at that position, but it is a sugar and we'd rather name it than let you find it in the small print.

If sugar is something you're watching, Stella's freeze-dried single-ingredient treats contain exactly one thing each and no sweetener.

Where these sit against the other three biscuits

Raw Coated Biscuit Protein Fat kcal/biscuit Species
Duck 22% 11% 22 duck, turkey, goose
Chicken 20% 11% 22 chicken only
Beef 20% 11% 22 beef, lamb, pork
Lamb 20% 14% 24 lamb, pork

These are biscuits, not raw food. Stella's freeze-dried treats run 37% to 74% protein because they're pure meat... a baked biscuit needs starch to hold its shape, and that's the trade.

How many to give

Stella publishes no treat count and no dog-size guidance for these, and no "10% of daily calories" line either, though they do print that on their bone broths.

So here's ours: at 22 calories a biscuit, the usual rule of keeping treats to around 10% of daily calories works out to roughly two a day for a 20 lb dog, more for a bigger one. Your vet can give you your dog's actual daily number.

Full ingredient list

Beef, Peas, Chickpeas, Beef Liver, Lamb Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Cane Molasses, Pork Meal, Sweet Potato, Natural Vegetable Flavor, Beef Kidney, Beef Heart, Beef Tripe, Beef Bone, Pumpkin Seed, Organic Cranberries, Organic Spinach, Organic Broccoli, Organic Beets, Organic Carrots, Organic Squash, Organic Blueberries, Fenugreek Seed, Salt, Flaxseed, Gelatin, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative).

Reproduced exactly as Stella & Chewy's publishes it. Two notes: the gelatin is not identified by source, and this is the only one of the four biscuit recipes whose list contains no pumpkin.

Guaranteed analysis

  • Crude Protein (min) ... 20%
  • Crude Fat (min) ... 11%
  • Crude Fiber (max) ... 6%
  • Moisture (max) ... 10%

Calorie content

22 kcal per biscuit ... 3,756 kcal/kg

On the label statement

Stella publishes no AAFCO statement for these, and no "for intermittent or supplemental feeding only" line, which is what you'd normally expect on a treat. Its absence doesn't make a biscuit a complete food. These are treats... keep them to around 10% of the day's calories and let a balanced food do the rest.

Storage and serving

Shelf-stable, no refrigeration needed. Break larger biscuits down for a small dog and give with fresh water nearby. Supervise, as with any treat.
