Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Whitefish, fish broth, salmon oil.
- Contains: Fish ... Legumes (lentils, peas) ... Potatoes and sweet potatoes.
- Does not contain: Chicken (including chicken broth, chicken fat and chicken liver), beef, pork, lamb, turkey, duck, egg, dairy, grains, soy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- All fish, but more than one kind. There's no land meat here, but the fish broth doesn't name its species and salmon oil is the fourth ingredient, so it isn't a whitefish-only food. Fromm's AAFCO statement also leaves out growth of large breed puppies.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Whitefish & Lentil is the Fromm Pâté for the family keeping meat out of the bowl altogether. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, describes it as finely minced whitefish cooked in fish broth with lentils, sweet potatoes and carrots, and at 2% minimum fat it's one of the leaner Fromm cans.
What's actually in it
Whitefish and fish broth are the first two ingredients, and salmon oil comes fourth, right after the lentils. Fromm includes salmon oil as a source of omega fatty acids to support skin and coat. There's no chicken, beef, pork or egg anywhere on the list.
It's grain-free. Lentils, sweet potatoes, carrots, potatoes and peas make up the rest, with a little tomato paste. Xanthan gum and locust bean gum set the pâté, and Fromm adds vitamins and minerals, including proteinate (chelated) forms.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog, or a small or medium breed puppy, that does well on fish, and it's a natural pick for a household avoiding chicken, beef and other land meats. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement excludes growth of large size dogs, it isn't meant as the main food for a large breed puppy.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve it alongside kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Whitefish & Lentil mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Whitefish & Lentil. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Sold as a single 13 oz can or a case of 12 cans. For a 20 lb dog eating only this food, Fromm's chart calls for 1 2/9 cans a day, so a case of 12 lasts about ten days. Fed as a topper over kibble, a case goes much further. Fromm's current listing shows a 12.2 oz can, and the calorie and feeding figures above are based on Fromm's can.
Storage
Store unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
