Fromm Heartland Gold Grain-Free Puppy Dry Dog Food

Heartland Gold Puppy is Fromm's red meat recipe for small and medium puppies, made with beef and pork instead of poultry. It's grain-free, and it's a natural fit for a household where chicken is off the menu from the very first bag.

What's actually in it

Beef comes first, then pork meat and bone meal, a concentrated pork protein that includes some bone. Pork, dried egg product, pork liver, pork fat, salmon oil and cheese follow. Lamb is listed after cheese, close to the end of the main ingredients, so it's a small contributor.

Peas, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes and pea flour supply the starch in place of grains. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. At 27% minimum protein, 18% minimum fat and 402 calories per cup, it's the richest of the four Heartland Gold recipes.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a toy, small or medium puppy, up to about 50 lb as an adult per Fromm's chart, and a pregnant or nursing mother, in a home that needs to avoid chicken, duck or turkey. Fromm describes this as a grain-free recipe, and the starches come from lentils, peas, chickpeas and potatoes. Fromm Family Heartland Gold® Puppy Food for Dogs with Red Meat is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for gestation/lactation and growth, except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,757 kcal/kg ... 1,708 kcal/lb ... 402 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by the weight your puppy is expected to reach as an adult and by age. Split the total across three or four meals for young puppies and two meals later on.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Each range runs from a lower to a higher daily amount, so begin near the middle and watch your puppy rather than the bag. Fromm notes that pregnant or nursing dogs may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check body condition every couple of weeks while your puppy grows... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Heartland Gold Puppy mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Heartland Gold Puppy. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 51 and 110 level cups. For a puppy expected to reach 30 lb, eating about 2½ cups a day at three to four months, that's about a week, three weeks, and six weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
