- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers gestation/lactation and growth, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Heartland Gold Large Breed Puppy is Fromm's red meat recipe for big puppies on their way to 50 lb and well beyond. It's grain-free and poultry-free, with calories set a little lower than the regular Heartland Gold Puppy so a fast-growing large breed can eat a full bowl at a steady pace.
What's actually in it
Beef leads, followed by pork meat and bone meal, a concentrated pork protein that includes some bone. Pork itself shows up a few places later, along with dried egg product, pork liver, pork fat, salmon oil and cheese. Lamb is listed near the bottom of the main ingredients, so it's a small part of the recipe.
The starches come from lentils, peas, chickpeas, potatoes, pea flour and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. At 373 calories per cup it's lighter than Heartland Gold Puppy at 402.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a large or giant breed puppy, or a pregnant or nursing mother, in a household that needs to avoid chicken, duck or turkey. Fromm's feeding chart for this food starts at an expected adult weight of 50 lb, and the AAFCO statement includes growth of large size dogs. Fromm describes this as a grain-free recipe, and the starches come from lentils, peas, chickpeas and potatoes. If your veterinarian has talked with you about grain-free foods or legumes, bring this ingredient list along to your next visit.
It isn't meant for a puppy that will be small as an adult; Heartland Gold Puppy is the better match there. It also isn't for a puppy avoiding beef, pork, fish oil, egg or dairy. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

AAFCO statement
Fromm Family Heartland Gold® Large Breed Puppy Food for Dogs with Red Meat is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for gestation/lactation and growth, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
Calorie content
3,583 kcal/kg ... 1,629 kcal/lb ... 373 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by the weight your puppy is expected to reach as an adult and by age. Split the total across three or four meals for young puppies and two meals later on.
| Expected adult weight | 6 to 11 weeks | 3 to 4 months | 5 to 7 months | 8 to 12 months | 12 to 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 lb | 1⅔ to 2⅓ cups | 2½ to 3⅓ cups | 2¾ to 3½ cups | 2¾ to 3⅓ cups | 2¾ to 3⅓ cups |
| 70 lb | 2 to 3 cups | 3¼ to 4⅓ cups | 3⅔ to 4½ cups | 3⅔ to 4½ cups | 3½ to 4¼ cups |
| 90 lb | 2 to 3¼ cups | 3¼ to 4⅔ cups | 3¾ to 5 cups | 3¾ to 5 cups | 3⅔ to 4⅔ cups |
| 110 lb | 2⅓ to 3¾ cups | 3¾ to 5½ cups | 4⅓ to 5¾ cups | 4⅓ to 5¾ cups | 4⅓ to 5½ cups |
| 140 lb | 2¾ to 3⅓ cups | 3¾ to 5½ cups | 5 to 6¼ cups | 5¼ to 6¼ cups | 5¼ to 6 cups |
| 170 lb | 3⅓ to 3¾ cups | 4½ to 6⅓ cups | 6 to 7¼ cups | 6 to 7¼ cups | 6 to 6¾ cups |
| 200 lb | 3¾ to 4⅓ cups | 5 to 7 cups | 6¾ to 8¼ cups | 6¾ to 8 cups | 6¾ to 7⅔ cups |
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Each range runs from a lower to a higher daily amount, so begin near the middle and watch your puppy rather than the bag. Fromm notes that pregnant or nursing dogs may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check body condition every couple of weeks while your puppy grows... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Heartland Gold Large Breed Puppy mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Heartland Gold Large Breed Puppy. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
26 lb bag, which holds roughly 113 level cups. For a puppy expected to reach 70 lb, eating about 4⅓ cups a day at three to four months, that's close to four weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
