Fromm Heartland Gold Grain-Free Adult Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Beef, pork meat and bone meal, pork liver, pork fat, salmon oil, egg, cheese, lamb.
- Contains: Beef ... Pork ... Lamb ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Lentils, peas, chickpeas and pea flour ... Potatoes ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Chicken, duck, turkey, blueberries, cranberries, corn, wheat, rice, barley, oats or soy (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- A beef and pork food. The real proteins are beef and pork (pork meat and bone meal, pork liver, pork fat). There is no chicken, duck or turkey in it. Lamb appears only after dried yeast, near the bottom of the main list, so it is not a lamb diet.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers growth and maintenance, except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Heartland Gold Adult is Fromm's red meat recipe for the everyday adult dog, built on beef and pork rather than poultry. It's grain-free, and it's one of the easiest ways in the Fromm family to feed a dog who needs to stay away from chicken.
What's actually in it
Beef comes first, followed by pork meat and bone meal, which is a concentrated pork protein that includes some bone. Pork liver and pork fat come next on the animal side, with salmon oil, dried egg product and cheese further down. Lamb is listed, but it falls after dried yeast, so treat it as a minor ingredient.
In place of grains, the recipe uses lentils, peas, chickpeas, potatoes and pea flour. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Pork fat and salmon oil are preserved with mixed tocopherols, and sorbic acid is the other preservative. Carrots, celery and alfalfa meal round out the list.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog who needs to avoid chicken, duck or turkey, or a dog that simply prefers red meat. Fromm's AAFCO statement also covers growth, so it can be fed to a growing puppy that will be under 70 lb as an adult. Fromm describes this as a grain-free recipe, and the starches come from lentils, peas, chickpeas and potatoes. If your veterinarian has talked with you about grain-free foods or legumes, bring this ingredient list along to your next visit.
It isn't for a large breed puppy, since the AAFCO statement excludes growth of large size dogs, and it isn't for a dog avoiding beef, pork, fish oil, egg or dairy. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

Fromm Family Heartland Gold® Adult Food for Dogs with Red Meat is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance, except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
Calorie content
3,637 kcal/kg ... 1,653 kcal/lb ... 378 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by your dog's ideal weight. Split the total across two meals.

| 10 lb | ½ cup | ⅞ cup |
| 15 lb | ¾ cup | 1¼ cups |

| 25 lb | 1⅛ cups | 1¾ cups |
| 30 lb | 1⅓ cups | 2 cups |
| 35 lb | 1½ cups | 2¼ cups |

| 75 lb | 2⅔ cups | 4 cups |
| 80 lb | 2¾ cups | 4⅛ cups |
| 85 lb | 2⅞ cups | 4⅓ cups |

| 95 lb | 3⅛ cups | 4¾ cups |
| 100 lb | 3¼ cups | 4⅞ cups |
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Heartland Gold Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Heartland Gold Adult. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 52 and 113 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 2⅞ cups a day, that's about six days, two and a half weeks, and five and a half weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
