Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Turkey (turkey liver, turkey broth), chicken (chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken cartilage), whitefish, menhaden fish meal, egg, salmon oil, cheese.

A big dog carrying a few extra pounds puts that weight on big joints, so Fromm made a weight management recipe just for large breeds. Gold Large Breed Weight Management is the lightest food in the Gold line at 315 kcal per cup, a grain-inclusive recipe from Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wisconsin, with extra fiber so a large dog still gets a full-looking bowl.
What's actually in it
Turkey liver and turkey broth lead, followed by chicken meal. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, which concentrates its protein. Whitefish, menhaden fish meal, dried egg product and a little cheese round out the protein side, and chicken fat and chicken cartilage appear further along.
The grains are oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, white rice, whole oats, whole barley and millet, with potatoes and sweet potatoes. Flaxseed, miscanthus grass and oat hulls bring fiber to a 10% maximum. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds L-carnitine as well. A probiotic blend and chicory root extract are included by Fromm to support digestion. Mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid are the preservatives.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits large and giant breed adults, 50 lb and up at their ideal weight, who need to trim down or who gain easily on a regular large breed food. Fromm's chart gives a less active and an active amount for each ideal weight.
It isn't for puppies or nursing moms, since Fromm's statement covers maintenance only, and it isn't for a dog avoiding chicken, turkey, fish, egg or dairy. Weigh your dog every two or three weeks and check body condition... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Go easy on treats while your dog is slimming down, and always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Large Breed Weight Management mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Large Breed Weight Management. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
30 lb bag, which holds roughly 145 level cups. For a 70 lb less active dog eating 2⅞ cups a day, that's about seven weeks. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
