Fromm Gold Weight Management Dry Dog Food

Gold Weight Management is Fromm's lighter Gold recipe for the dog who needs to slim down a little or hold steady at a healthy weight. It's a grain-inclusive food from Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wisconsin, with less fat, more fiber and 334 kcal per cup, so a dieting dog still gets a bowl that looks like dinner.

What's actually in it

This one starts differently from the rest of the Gold line. Turkey liver is the first ingredient, followed by chicken meal and turkey broth. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, which concentrates the protein. Menhaden fish meal, whitefish, dried egg product and a little cheese add to the protein side, and chicken fat appears mid-list.

The grains are oatmeal, pearled barley, whole oats, whole barley, brown rice, millet and white rice, with potatoes and sweet potatoes. Oat hulls, flaxseed and pea fiber bring the fiber up to a 10% maximum. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds L-carnitine as well. A probiotic blend and chicory root extract are included by Fromm to support digestion. Mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid are the preservatives.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an adult dog who's carrying a few extra pounds, or one who gains easily on regular Gold Adult. Fromm's chart gives two amounts for each ideal weight, one to hold weight steady and one for weight reduction, so you can use the same bag before and after the goal is reached.

It isn't for puppies or nursing moms, since Fromm's statement covers maintenance only. It's also not a fit for a dog avoiding chicken, turkey, fish, egg, dairy or peas. Calorie content

3,241 kcal/kg ... 1,473 kcal/lb ... 334 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your dog's ideal weight (the weight you're aiming for, not the current weight). Use the weight control column to hold steady and the weight reduction column to slim down. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less food. Weigh your dog every two or three weeks and check body condition... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Go easy on treats while your dog is slimming down, and always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Weight Management mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Weight Management. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

5 lb, 15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 22, 66 and 132 level cups. For a 40 lb dog on the weight control amount of 2½ cups a day, that's about nine days, close to four weeks, and about seven and a half weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
