Little dogs run hot. Gold Small Breed Adult is Fromm's answer for the Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Cavaliers and terriers who burn through calories faster than their size suggests. It's a grain-inclusive chicken recipe from Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, with a smaller kibble and a bit more fat and calories per cup than Gold Adult.

What's actually in it

Fresh chicken and chicken meal lead, followed by oatmeal and pearled barley, then chicken broth. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, so it brings concentrated protein. Menhaden fish meal, dried egg product, chicken liver and cheese add to the protein, and duck and lamb appear in small amounts near the end of the list.

Grains include oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, whole oats, whole barley and white rice, with potatoes and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed bring omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid keep it fresh.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits healthy small breed adults, roughly 2 to 28 lb going by Fromm's chart, with no known food sensitivities, in families who prefer a grain-inclusive food. Fromm's AAFCO statement covers growth as well as maintenance, so it can also be fed to a growing small breed puppy.

Fromm Family Small Breed Adult Gold Food for Dogs is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).

Calorie content

3,797 kcal/kg ... 1,726 kcal/lb ... 425 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your dog's ideal weight. Fromm's chart for this food uses small-dog weight steps rather than every 5 lb. Split the total across two meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Small Breed Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Small Breed Adult. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

5 lb and 15 lb bags, which hold roughly 20 and 61 level cups. For a 12 lb active adult eating 1 cup a day, that's about three weeks and two months respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
