Fromm Gold Senior/Reduced Activity Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken broth, chicken liver, chicken fat, chicken cartilage), menhaden fish meal, salmon oil, cheese, egg, duck, lamb.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Duck ... Lamb ... Grains (oatmeal, barley, brown rice, millet, whole oats, white rice) ... Potatoes ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Beef, pork, corn, wheat, soy, peas or lentils (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a chicken-free food. Chicken is the first three ingredients, and chicken liver, chicken fat and chicken cartilage follow later. Duck and lamb come after salt and carrots, so they are a small flavor note, not the protein base.

Fromm calls this one Reduced Activity & Senior Gold, and the name says who it's for: the older dog who'd rather nap in a sunny spot than chase a ball, and the adult of any age who just doesn't burn much. It's a grain-inclusive chicken recipe from Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wisconsin, built with a little less fat and fewer calories per cup than Gold Adult.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads three ways, as fresh chicken, chicken meal and chicken broth. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, so it packs more protein by weight. Menhaden fish meal, chicken liver, cheese and dried egg product add to the protein side, and Fromm includes chicken cartilage further down. Duck and lamb appear near the end of the list in small amounts.
For carbohydrates there's oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, millet, whole oats, white rice and whole barley, with potatoes and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which Fromm includes to support digestion. Mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid are the preservatives.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult or senior dog with a slower pace, or a dog that keeps a little extra on with regular Gold Adult. At 368 kcal per cup it's lighter than Gold Adult, so a less active dog can still get a satisfying bowl.
It isn't for puppies or nursing moms, since Fromm's statement covers maintenance only. It also isn't for a dog avoiding chicken, fish, egg or dairy. A dog that truly needs to lose weight may do better on Gold Weight Management, and an older dog with a health condition should have the food choice made with your veterinarian. These are starting points, not prescriptions. Most dogs eating this food will land in the less active column. Fromm notes that spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less food. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Senior Gold mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Senior Gold. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
5 lb, 15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 21, 64 and 128 level cups. For a 30 lb less active dog eating 1½ cups a day, that's about two weeks, six weeks, and twelve weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
