Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Salmon, chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, dried egg product.
- Contains: Fish ... Chicken ... Egg ... Peas ... Potatoes ... Flaxseed.
- Does not contain: Beef, pork, lamb, turkey, duck, dairy, grains, soy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- As much chicken as salmon. Salmon is first, but chicken, chicken broth and chicken liver are the next three ingredients, and egg is in it too. This is not a fish-only food.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Salmon & Chicken brings fish and poultry together in one smooth pâté. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, describes it as finely minced salmon and chicken cooked in chicken broth with potatoes, carrots and peas.
What's actually in it
Salmon is the first ingredient, followed by chicken, chicken broth and chicken liver, so the recipe leans on both proteins about equally. Dried egg product is in it as well. Flaxseed adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat; there's no separate fish oil because the salmon itself is in the can.
It's grain-free. Potatoes, carrots, peas and tomato paste make up the rest, with xanthan gum and locust bean gum setting the pâté. Fromm adds vitamins and minerals, including proteinate (chelated) forms.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog, or a small or medium breed puppy, that does well on both fish and chicken. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement excludes growth of large size dogs, it isn't meant as the main food for a large breed puppy.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve it alongside kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Salmon & Chicken mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Salmon & Chicken. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Sold as a single 13 oz can or a case of 12 cans. For a 20 lb dog eating only this food, Fromm's chart calls for 1.2 cans a day, so a case of 12 lasts about ten days. Fed as a topper over kibble, a case goes much further. Fromm's current listing shows a 12.2 oz can, and the calorie and feeding figures above are based on Fromm's can.
Storage
Store unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
