Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken broth, chicken fat, chicken liver, chicken cartilage), menhaden fish meal, egg, salmon oil, cheese, duck, lamb.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Duck ... Lamb ... Grains (oatmeal, barley, brown rice, whole oats) ... Potatoes ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Beef, pork, corn, wheat, soy, peas or lentils (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a chicken-free food. Chicken is the first three ingredients, and chicken fat, chicken liver and chicken cartilage appear further down. Duck and lamb sit near the bottom of the list, after the carrots, so they are flavor rather than the base.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers gestation/lactation and growth, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult). It is a puppy and mother food, not an adult maintenance food.
Gold Puppy is the starter bag in Fromm's Gold line, made for puppies from weaning through their first year and for moms who are expecting or nursing. It's the same family of grain-inclusive chicken recipes that Fromm Family Foods has been making in Wisconsin for generations, with a little more protein and fat than Gold Adult to keep up with a growing body.
What's actually in it
Fresh chicken, chicken meal and chicken broth open the list. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Menhaden fish meal comes in sixth, ahead of the rice, and dried egg product, chicken liver and cheese add to the protein side. Duck and lamb are on the label in small amounts near the end.
The grains are oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, whole oats and whole barley, with potatoes and sweet potatoes alongside. Salmon oil sits much higher on this list than in most Gold recipes, and together with flaxseed it adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Preservation comes from mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits puppies of toy, small and medium breeds, plus pregnant or nursing dogs, in homes that want a grain-inclusive food. Fromm's AAFCO statement also covers growth of large size dogs, though Fromm's own feeding chart for this bag stops at an expected adult weight of 50 lb. For a puppy headed well past that, Fromm makes Gold Large Breed Puppy with its own chart.
It isn't the right bag for a puppy avoiding chicken, fish, egg or dairy, since all four are in it. Once your pup is grown, plan to move to an adult Gold recipe, since this food's AAFCO statement does not cover adult maintenance. Calorie content
3,849 kcal/kg ... 1,749 kcal/lb ... 420 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by the weight your puppy is expected to reach as an adult and by age. Fromm gives a range for each age. Split the total across three or four small meals for young puppies, and two meals as they get older.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Begin within the range for your puppy's age and expected size, then watch body condition every week or two... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust up or down. Fromm notes that spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less food. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Puppy mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Puppy. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
5 lb, 15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 21, 62 and 125 level cups. For a puppy expected to reach about 40 lb, at 3 to 4 months and eating the top of the range at 2⅞ cups a day, that's about a week, three weeks, and six weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
