Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken broth, chicken fat, chicken liver, chicken cartilage), menhaden fish meal, egg, cheese, salmon oil, duck, lamb.

Big puppies grow fast, and Gold Large Breed Puppy is Fromm's Gold recipe built for that long stretch from a wobbly eight-week-old to a full-size adult. It's a grain-inclusive chicken recipe from Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wisconsin, with fewer calories per cup than regular Gold Puppy, and a feeding chart that runs all the way to 24 months for the breeds that take their time growing up.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads as fresh chicken, chicken meal and chicken broth. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein. Menhaden fish meal, dried egg product, chicken liver and cheese add to the protein side, and Fromm includes chicken cartilage further down. Duck and lamb appear near the end of the list in small amounts.
The grains are oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, whole oats and whole barley, with potatoes and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. A probiotic blend and chicory root extract are included by Fromm to support digestion. Mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid are the preservatives.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits puppies expected to reach 50 lb or more as adults... Labs, Goldens, Shepherds, Danes and the like... in families who want a grain-inclusive food. Fromm's chart covers an expected adult weight of 50 to 200 lb and ages from 6 weeks to 24 months, so many large and giant breeds can stay on it through their second year.
It isn't the right bag for a puppy avoiding chicken, fish, egg or dairy. For a puppy expected to stay under 50 lb, Gold Puppy is the better match. When your dog is fully grown, plan to move to an adult food, since this one's AAFCO statement does not cover adult maintenance. Calorie content
3,625 kcal/kg ... 1,648 kcal/lb ... 384 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by the weight your puppy is expected to reach as an adult and by age. Fromm gives a range for each age. Split the total across three or four small meals for young puppies, and two meals as they get older.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Begin within the range for your puppy's age and expected size, then check body condition every week or two... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Large breed puppies do best growing at a steady pace rather than a fast one, so lean toward the lower end if your pup is getting round. Fromm notes that spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less food. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Large Breed Puppy mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Large Breed Puppy. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 64 and 128 level cups. For a 5 to 7 month old puppy expected to reach about 70 lb, eating the top of the range at 4⅓ cups a day, that's about two weeks and a month respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
