Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken broth, chicken liver, chicken fat), menhaden fish meal, egg, cheese, salmon oil, duck, lamb.

Gold Large Breed Adult is Fromm's Gold recipe for the big dogs... Labs, Goldens, Shepherds, Doodles and anyone else expected to top 50 lb as an adult. It's a grain-inclusive chicken recipe from Fromm Family Foods in Mequon, Wisconsin, with moderate fat and fewer calories per cup than Gold Adult, so a big dog can eat a generous bowl without the calories getting away from you.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads as fresh chicken, chicken meal and chicken broth. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein. Menhaden fish meal, chicken liver, dried egg product and cheese round out the protein side. Duck and lamb appear near the end of the list in small amounts.
The carbohydrates come from oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, white rice, whole oats and whole barley, plus potatoes and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid are the only preservatives. Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits healthy large and giant breed adults, 50 lb and up, with no known food sensitivities, in homes that want a grain-inclusive food. Fromm's AAFCO statement covers growth as well as maintenance, including large size growth, though Fromm also makes Gold Large Breed Puppy with an age-based chart if you'd rather start there.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Large Breed Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Large Breed Adult. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 64 and 129 level cups. For a 70 lb active adult eating 4 cups a day, that's about two weeks and a month respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
