Gold Healthy Weight is Fromm's answer for the cat who's slowed down a bit... the window-watcher, the champion napper, the one who's started to fill out around the middle. Fromm designed it for less active adult cats, to give complete and balanced nutrition with fewer calories per cup while helping a cat reach and hold an ideal body weight.

What's actually in it

The protein base is the same family as Gold Adult: chicken first, then chicken meal, with salmon meal, duck, dried egg product, cheese and chicken liver further down. Protein stays high at a 30% minimum, while fat drops to an 11% minimum.

Where it differs is the fiber and the energy. Oatmeal, millet, miscanthus grass and oat hulls join the pearled barley, white rice and potatoes, bringing crude fiber up to a 6% maximum, and the calories come down to 340 per cup. Fromm adds L-carnitine, and includes salmon oil and flaxseed for omega fatty acids to support skin and coat, along with taurine, a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which Fromm includes to support digestion. Preservatives are mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an adult cat who is less active, mostly indoors, or carrying a few extra pounds, in a home that's comfortable with a grain-inclusive food. Fromm's chart gives two columns, so you can feed to hold a cat's current weight or step down for gradual weight reduction. Weight loss in cats should always be slow and steady, so it's worth checking in with your veterinarian before cutting portions.

Fromm Family Healthy Weight Gold Food for Cats is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.

Calorie content

3,369 kcal/kg ... 1,532 kcal/lb ... 340 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's current weight. Use the weight control column to hold steady, or the weight reduction column for gradual loss. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens weighing less than four pounds and/or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, young, pregnant or nursing cats may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Healthy Weight mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Healthy Weight. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and cats in particular tend to accept a new food more readily when it's introduced a little at a time.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4 lb and 10 lb bags, which hold roughly 18 and 45 level cups. For a 10 lb cat on the weight control amount of ⅔ cup a day, that's about four weeks and nine and a half weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
