Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Fish (whitefish, salmon meal, salmon, salmon oil), chicken liver, chicken fat, egg, cheese.
- Contains: Fish ... Chicken ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Peas, lentils and chickpeas (lentils, peas, chickpeas, pea starch, pea fiber) ... Potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes) ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Grains (no corn, wheat, rice, oats or barley), soy, beef, pork, lamb, duck or turkey (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a chicken-free food. It's sold as an ocean fish recipe, but chicken liver and chicken fat are both in the first thirteen ingredients. Legumes (lentils, peas, chickpeas, pea starch) fill ingredients three through six.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers adult maintenance only. It is not cleared for growth, so it isn't a puppy food.
Gold Coast is Fromm's fish-based answer for the dog who needs to trim down or stay trim. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, built it around wild caught whitefish and salmon at a lower calorie count than their everyday Gold foods, with no grains in the recipe. It's a good fit for families who want a weight management food that doesn't lead with chicken.
What's actually in it
Whitefish is the first ingredient and salmon meal is the second, with more salmon, salmon oil, dried egg product and cheese further down. Chicken liver and chicken fat are in there too, so this is a fish-forward recipe rather than a fish-only one. Fromm adds L-carnitine, which they include to support weight management, and the fiber sits higher than in their regular adult recipes (8% max).
In place of grains, the carbohydrates come from lentils, peas, chickpeas, pea starch, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Flaxseed and salmon oil add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and a probiotic blend with chicory root extract is added, which Fromm includes to support digestion. Preservation comes from mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits an adult dog who has put on a few pounds or tends to, and one that is happier on fish than on poultry-heavy foods. At 330 kcal per cup it gives a little more volume in the bowl for the calories than a standard adult kibble.
It isn't the right bag for a puppy, since the AAFCO statement covers maintenance only. It's also not a choice for a dog that must avoid chicken, egg or dairy, or a family that prefers to avoid legume-heavy recipes. Calorie content
3,297 kcal/kg ... 1,499 kcal/lb ... 330 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Coast mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Coast. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 18, 54 and 118 level cups. For a 50 lb less active adult eating 2⅓ cups a day, that's about a week, about 3 weeks, and about 7 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
