Know Before You Buy

Chicken & Duck is a poultry pâté with a little something extra. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, describes it as finely minced chicken and duck cooked in chicken broth with potatoes, carrots and peas, and it's a smooth, rich can that slices cleanly or mashes easily over kibble.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads, then chicken broth, then duck, then chicken liver, so chicken does most of the work and duck adds flavor and variety. Dried egg product is in the recipe too. Unlike many Fromm cans, this one has no salmon oil; flaxseed is the omega source, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat.
It's grain-free. Potatoes, carrots and peas make up the rest, with a little tomato paste. Agar-agar and xanthan gum give the pâté its body, and Fromm adds vitamins and proteinate (chelated) minerals.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog of any age that does well on poultry, including a large breed puppy, and it's a nice choice for a household that wants to avoid fish. It also makes a tempting topper for a picky eater.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve it alongside kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Chicken & Duck mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Chicken & Duck. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Sold as a single 13 oz can or a case of 12 cans. For a 20 lb dog eating only this food, Fromm's chart calls for 1 2/9 cans a day, so a case of 12 lasts about ten days. Fed as a topper over kibble, a case goes much further. Fromm's current listing shows a 12.2 oz can, and the calorie and feeding figures above are based on Fromm's can.
Storage
Store unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
