Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken broth, chicken fat, chicken liver), menhaden fish meal, egg, cheese, duck, lamb, salmon oil.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (oatmeal, barley, brown rice, white rice, whole oats) ... Potatoes ... Yeast.

Gold Adult is the bag a lot of Fromm families start with and never leave. It's a grain-inclusive chicken recipe from Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, built for the everyday adult dog who walks, plays and naps on a normal schedule. Nothing exotic, nothing trendy... just a well-made kibble with a long track record.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads three ways: fresh chicken, chicken meal and chicken broth. Chicken meal is simply chicken with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Menhaden fish meal, dried egg product, chicken liver and cheese round out the protein side. Duck and lamb are on the label too, but they sit near the bottom of the ingredient list, so think of them as flavor rather than the foundation.
The carbohydrates come from a mix of whole grains: oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, whole oats, white rice and whole barley, plus potatoes and sweet potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog of most sizes with no known food sensitivities, and families who want a grain-inclusive food. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers growth as well as maintenance, it can also be fed to a growing puppy, including a large breed puppy. Fromm does make a dedicated Gold Puppy and Gold Large Breed Puppy if you'd rather start there.

Calorie content
3,735 kcal/kg ... 1,698 kcal/lb ... 418 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Adult. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
5 lb, 15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 20, 60 and 120 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 2¾ cups a day, that's about a week, three weeks, and six weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
