Fromm Gold Adult Dry Cat Food

Gold Adult is Fromm's everyday dry food for the grown-up cat... the one who naps in the sunny spot, chases a toy mouse at midnight and expects breakfast on time. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, built it for the normally active adult cat, with a grain-inclusive chicken base and a small, steady list of extras.

What's actually in it

Chicken leads the list twice: fresh chicken first, then chicken meal, which is chicken with the water cooked out so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Salmon meal comes in fifth, followed by dried egg product, duck, cheese and chicken liver. With a 32% minimum protein, it's a meat-forward kibble.

The carbohydrates are pearled barley, white rice and potatoes. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm also adds taurine (an amino acid cats need in their diet), chicken cartilage, a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy adult cat with no known food sensitivities, in a home that's happy feeding a grain-inclusive food. If your cat is mostly indoors and prone to hairballs, Fromm also makes Gold Indoor Cat Hairball Control, and for a cat that needs fewer calories there's Gold Healthy Weight.

Fromm Family Adult Gold Food for Cats is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.

Calorie content

3,820 kcal/kg ... 1,737 kcal/lb ... 395 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that age, breed, weight and activity level all affect how much a cat needs, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Adult. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and cats in particular tend to accept a new food more readily when it's introduced a little at a time.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4 lb and 10 lb bags, which hold roughly 18 and 44 level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating ⅔ cup a day, that's about four weeks and nine weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
