Fromm Four-Star Trout & Whitefish Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Trout, whitefish, salmon meal, egg, menhaden fish meal, pork liver, pork fat, salmon oil.
- Contains: Fish ... Pork ... Egg ... Grains (whole barley, whole oats, brown rice, oatmeal, pearled barley) ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Chicken in any form (no chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken broth or chicken liver), beef, dairy, corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils or potatoes (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Chicken-free, but not pork-free. There is no chicken anywhere in this recipe, which makes it a good fit for chicken-sensitive dogs. Pork liver and pork fat are in it, though, and egg is the fourth ingredient, so it isn't a fish-only food.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Trout & Whitefish is a fish-first recipe from Fromm's Four-Star line, paired with whole grains like barley and oats. Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, built the Four-Star line for rotating between recipes, and this is the one many families reach for when chicken isn't working out. It's a grain-inclusive, chicken-free kibble with a fish flavor most dogs are happy to see in the bowl.
What's actually in it
The first three ingredients are all fish: trout, whitefish and salmon meal. Salmon meal is salmon with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product and menhaden fish meal come next, with pork liver and pork fat a little further down. There is no chicken in the recipe at all.
The carbohydrates come from whole grains: whole barley, whole oats, brown rice, oatmeal and pearled barley. Broccoli, apples, cranberries and blueberries make smaller appearances. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog who does well on fish, a dog whose family is steering clear of chicken, and households who want a grain-inclusive food. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including large breed growth, it can feed a puppy as well as an adult.

3,706 kcal/kg ... 1,685 kcal/lb ... 389 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Trout & Whitefish mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Trout & Whitefish. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 52 and 112 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3¼ cups a day, that's a little over two weeks and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
