Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Trout, whitefish, menhaden fish meal, dried egg product, salmon meal, salmon oil.
- Contains: Fish ... Egg ... Grains (whole barley, whole oats, brown rice, oatmeal, pearled barley).
- Does not contain: Chicken (including chicken fat, chicken meal, chicken broth and chicken liver), beef, dairy, corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Fish and egg, not fish alone. Unlike most Four-Star cat recipes, there's no chicken on the list at all, but dried egg product is the fourth ingredient, and "natural flavor" doesn't name its source.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, so it can be fed to kittens and adult cats alike.
Trout & Whitefish is the Four-Star cat recipe that stays with the water. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, pairs trout and whitefish with whole grains, and it's the one dry recipe in the Four-Star cat line we've checked that carries no chicken ingredients at all. Fromm says it provides complete and balanced nutrition for cats of all ages and can be alternated with other Four-Star recipes.
What's actually in it
Trout and whitefish lead the list, followed by menhaden fish meal, dried egg product and salmon meal. Fish meal is simply fish with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Instead of chicken fat, the added fat here is canola oil plus salmon oil.
The carbohydrates are all grains: whole barley, whole oats, brown rice, oatmeal and pearled barley, with no peas or potatoes. Miscanthus grass adds fiber. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Taurine is added, and Fromm includes a probiotic blend and chicory root extract to support digestion. Broccoli, apples, cranberries and blueberries appear in small amounts, and menadione sodium bisulfite complex is listed at the very end as a source of vitamin K. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy cat of any age that does well on fish, and it's a natural pick for a household trying to keep chicken out of the bowl. It also fits families who want a grain-inclusive food without peas or potatoes.
It isn't the right bag for a cat avoiding egg or grains, since both are in it. And because the source of the natural flavor isn't named, a cat with a very strict protein limit should be checked with your veterinarian first. Calorie content
3,826 kcal/kg ... 1,739 kcal/lb ... 421 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, kittens and cats that are pregnant or nursing may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist behind the ribs... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week, or a little longer for a fussy cat. Start with roughly a quarter Trout & Whitefish mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Trout & Whitefish. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb and 10 lb bags, which hold roughly 16 and 41 level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating ½ cup a day, that's about a month and about two and a half months respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
