Fromm Four-Star Salmon A La Veg Dry Cat Food

Salmon À La Veg is the Four-Star choice for families who want a fish recipe with grains in it. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, describes it as an entrée with salmon, fish broth, liver and an assortment of fruits and vegetables, and like the rest of the Four-Star line it's made to be rotated with other Four-Star recipes.

What's actually in it

Salmon and salmon meal come first, then whitefish. Salmon meal is simply salmon with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Fish broth, herring meal and dried egg product follow. Chicken fat and chicken liver appear a little further down, so the fish is the foundation but not the only animal protein.

The carbohydrates come from pearled barley and white rice, with peas, potatoes and sweet potatoes behind them. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Taurine is added, and Fromm includes a probiotic blend and chicory root extract to support digestion. Carrots, apples, broccoli, celery, cranberries and blueberries are the "veg" in the name. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy cat of any age with no known food sensitivities, and families who prefer a grain-inclusive food with fish up front. Since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, it works for a kitten as well as a grown cat.

Calorie content

3,679 kcal/kg ... 1,673 kcal/lb ... 397 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, kittens and cats that are pregnant or nursing may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist behind the ribs... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week, or a little longer for a fussy cat. Start with roughly a quarter Salmon A La Veg mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Salmon A La Veg. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

10 lb bag, which holds roughly 42 level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating ½ cup a day, that's about three months. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
