Fromm Four-Star Grain Free Surf & Turf Dry Cat Food

Surf & Turf is the Four-Star recipe for the cat who can't choose between fish and fowl. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, calls it an exquisite, grain-free blend of salmon, chicken and whitefish, and it carries the highest minimum protein of the Four-Star dry cat recipes we stock.

What's actually in it

Salmon and chicken open the list, followed by salmon meal, duck meal and chicken meal. A "meal" is simply the meat with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product, whitefish, chicken fat and chicken liver add more, and pea protein contributes some as well.

With no grains, the carbohydrates come from chickpeas, sweet potatoes, potatoes and peas. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Taurine is added, and Fromm includes a probiotic blend and chicory root extract to support digestion. Carrots, apples, broccoli, celery, cranberries and blueberries round it out. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy cat of any age with no known food sensitivities that enjoys variety, and families who have chosen a grain-free food. It also makes an easy rotation partner for the other Four-Star recipes.

Calorie content

3,696 kcal/kg ... 1,680 kcal/lb ... 425 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, kittens and cats that are pregnant or nursing may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist behind the ribs... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week, or a little longer for a fussy cat. Start with roughly a quarter Surf & Turf mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Surf & Turf. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4 lb and 10 lb bags, which hold roughly 16 and 39 level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating ½ cup a day, that's about 5 weeks and about two and a half months respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
