Fromm Four-Star Grain Free Chicken Au Frommage Dry Cat Food

Chicken Au Frommage is the Four-Star recipe with a little cheese in it, and plenty of cats seem to notice. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, makes it as a rich, grain-free recipe with chicken and cheese. Fromm says it provides complete and balanced nutrition for cats of all ages and can be fed in rotation with other Four-Star varieties.

What's actually in it

Chicken and chicken meal lead the list. Chicken meal is simply chicken with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product, chicken liver and chicken fat follow, and cheese sits just after the chicken fat. Salmon oil appears later as a fat source.

With no grains, the carbohydrates come from chickpeas, lentils, peas, potatoes and sweet potatoes, and pea protein and pea fiber are also on the list. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Taurine is added, and Fromm includes a probiotic blend and chicory root extract to support digestion. Pears, apples, broccoli, olive oil, cranberries, blueberries and parsley round it out. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits a healthy cat of any age with no known food sensitivities, especially one that perks up for richer flavors, and families who have chosen a grain-free food.

Calorie content

3,752 kcal/kg ... 1,706 kcal/lb ... 432 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens under four pounds or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, kittens and cats that are pregnant or nursing may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist behind the ribs... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week, or a little longer for a fussy cat. Start with roughly a quarter Chicken Au Frommage mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Chicken Au Frommage. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

10 lb bag, which holds roughly 39 level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating ½ cup a day, that's about two and a half months. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
